Cardinals down Yellowjackets to start the season
September 15, 2013By Kennedy Johnson of Raytown South High School
The 2013 South Middle School Football season opened up at home as the Cardinals hosted the Yellowjackets from Center. Last year the Redbirds dominated the game only to lose late on a Hail Mary and a 2 pt. conversion pass in the last minute of the game. That sparked the Yellowjackets on their way to a 6-0 season. That loss stung the 2012 team which finished their season 4-2.
The coaches reminded this year's team you have to play great defense, limit the turnovers and penalties and play the entire game - The Cardinals haven't beaten Center since 1998, Coach Johnson's first year at South Middle. Since 1998, the Cardinals and Yellowjackets have played three more times with Center winning all three games.
The game & season for South Middle didn't start out well. The first few minutes was all Center as their defense caused a fumble and recovered the ball inside the Cardinals' ten yard line. Three plays later, the QB scrabbled in for Center and the two-pt. conversion pass was good, Yellowjackets -8 Cardinals -0.
From that point on, the Cardinals Defense took over. A second quarter safety by the Red Rage Defense made the score 8-2 Center. Late in 2nd Quarter, the offense drove down the field behind the running of John Burnett & Jasir Cox. QB Patrick Walton took the ball over from the 2-yd. line. The 2-pt. conversion run failed and the half ended in a 8-8 tie.
The second half began with the defense shutting down the Center running game and then playing great pass defense as the Yellowjackets failed to move the ball. Good field position put the Cardinal offense in a good position for a short drive, mid-way through the 3rd quarter, a 14 yd. run by Jasir Cox and a failed 2 pt-run had SMS up 14-8. Another defensive stand by the Red Rage "D" gave the ball back to the offense. Behind the powerful running game the Cardinals drove to the 4-yd. line where Jasir Cox ran the ball over from there. 2-pt. conversion failed and the Redbirds held a 20-8 lead.
Center mounted a late drive in the last few minutes of the game. A long run by one of the Yellowjackets running-back was ended when Micheal Cleaves stripped the ball from his hands thus ending the threat. The Cardinals ran out the clock and won the A-Game.
The B-team game was much like the earlier game, defenses dominated the field and turn-overs ended drives by both teams. The Cardinals drove down the field twice on the legs of Lunden Roulette, Javonte Brock and Kelyn Bolton. But the drive ended inside the 5 yd.-line on a fumble. The half ended with neither team scoring.
The game plan on offense did not change as the Cardinals were able to move the ball. The emphasis was to protect the football and end the turnovers. Late in 3rd Quarter, Kelyn Bolton carried the ball over from the 3 yd.-line and the 2 pt-conversion pass from QB Jamar Madge to Donny Locke gave them the lead, 8-0.
Later in the 3rd Quarter, off a Yellowjacket turnover, the Cardinals drove right back down the field and Javonte Brock found the endzone on an 8 yd. run, the 2 pt. try failed but the Cardinals held a 14-0 lead.
Both teams exchanged turnovers and the defenses held through the 4th Quarter. With less than a minute in the game, the Center QB found his receiver down the right sideline and hit him with a 40 yd. pass for a touchdown. The 2 pt. conversion run was fumbled into the endzone and a Center player fell on it making the score 14-8.
The last play of the game was the ensuing kickoff. Lunden Roulette fielded the ball and protected the win as the Cardinals B-team held on for the 14-8 win. Both teams host the Liberty North Eagles on Tuesday, Sept. 17th. Kickoff is at 4:00 pm.
