Home » Girls' Swimming & Diving NewsRaiders depth too much for PanthersOctober 17, 2011 Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High SchoolSTEVENS POINT -- When the Stevens Point Area Senior High girls swim team won the 200 medley relay, it threw Wisconsin Rapids for a loop. It might have been the first event of the meet, but the second-place finish caused some concern for Rapids coach Keri Siekert. The Raiders made up for it in the end by downing the Panthers 98-72 for their first Wisconsin Valley Conference victory Thursday. "I expected us to win the medley relay, but we overcame that with some very good swims," Siekert said. "It was nice to finally win our first Valley meet. "In some of our past meets, if we didn't win we didn't get the second and third-place points, but tonight our depth helped us out," Siekert added. Rapids improved to 1-2 in the Valley, while SPASH slipped to 2-2 in conference meets. The Raiders and Panthers split the individual events with four wins each, but Rapids scored big points by finishing second and third in three of the events that SPASH won. Winning two individual events for the Raiders were Alexa Pronga and Racheal Weiland. Pronga, who has been flirting with a sub-1 minute butterfly, finally reached her goal with a time of 59.81 seconds. "I've really been trying hard for that time since last year, and I feel a great sense of accomplishment by reaching it," said Pronga, who also won the 50 freestyle in 25.29. "It's still early in the season, and I'm excited to see what's to come and how much faster I can get." Weiland won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.49) and 200 individual medley (2:19.24). SPASH, meanwhile, had four different girls win events -- Natalie Neuwirth (200 freestyle, 1:58.90), Skyelar Volm (100 freestyle, 1:00.21), Sara Tainter (500 freestyle, 5:42.86) and Janna Check (100 backstroke, 1:07.82). In addition to the 200 medley relay, the Panthers also won the 200 freestyle relay. "Our 200 medley relay team really swam a great race," SPASH coach Ben Hall said. Added senior captain Ahna Butt, "I thought we put up a good fight against Rapids. I think we swam fast and had a lot of good races.
