Beyond the Mat with Coach Jahaan: Issue 10
February 24, 2014By jahaan ashfaq of Parkway South Wrestling
The location - Gym A of Parkway South High School. The time - 3pm. This was the site of the do or die round of the Class 4 District 1 tournament. A win here would send the wrestlers to the state tournament the following weekend. This round had been a place where many former Patriot wrestlers had their dreams crushed but this year was to be different. Of the nine wrestlers that wrestled this round, 6 took home a victory and sealed their fate to wrestle the following weekend.
Going into the do or die round, the Patriots had only one guaranteed state qualifier as Michael Aldrich recorded two major decisions and a regular decision on his way to the District finals. Although nerves were high going in, the Patriots were able to send another 6 into the 3rd place match. Connor Kloeppel, Tyler Emerson, Lucas Leggett, Joey Cunnigham, Eddie Morris, and Zach Conley. Seniors Zach Conley and Joey Cunningham both found themselves down early but battled back and found themselves getting their hand raised after the match. Kloeppel, Emerson, and Morris all won by tech or pinfall and Leggett won a 7-0 match in which he dominated the entire 6 minutes.
This marks the most state qualifiers with Coach Jim Lake leading the team and the 4th most in Parkway South history. It is safe to say that the Lake era is at a high point thus far.
The Patriots are looking forward to the state tournament and are expecting to bring home some hardware. Returning qualifiers Aldrich and Cunningham are leading the charge but all the wrestlers are excited for their chance to compete among the best in the state. Thank you to all those who came and supported the Patriots at districts, and we hope to see you all Thursday in Columbia. And as always, Go Patriots!!
