South nips Cape Notre Dame
January 15, 2014By psouth hoops of Parkway South Basketball
South made the annual drive to Cape Central for the Cape Shootout to play Cape Notre Dame. From the beginning, Cape Notre Dame's press and match up zone made South turn the ball over five times in the first minute. When South got the ball over half court, they were able to knock down shots by Luke Bakula and Connor McArthy. Even with nine turnovers in the first quarter South won the quarter 18-16. Once again the Notre Dame controlled the tempo with their tough defense in the second quarter. They were able to grind out the second quarter making some tough shots and walked into halftime with a three point lead. After having played a tough overtime game the night before, South knew they had to dig deep mentally and physically to win the second half. The third quarter was a tough one for South. It looked like Cape Notre Dame was going to wear out the Patriots. They hit two big three's and South turned the ball over several times. Cape won the quarter by 13 points and finished the quarter with a half court shoot that banked in to put Cape up by 10 to enter the fourth quarter. South could have easily folded to finish the game, but they did the exact opposite. South played great defense and made some big shots. No shot was bigger than Connor McArthy's three in the corner to put South up one with 5.2 seconds left. His shot proved to be the game winning shot. This win was South's most balanced game in regards to scoring. McArthy lead the team with 17 points and five others scored over six points. This win against Cape Notre Dame put the Patriots at 499 total wins in the school's history. South will go on the road to play the tough Webster Grove Statesmen Tuesday night.
