Alumni Game Recap

May 19, 2009
By psouth hoops of Parkway South High School

The Third Annual Alumni Basketball game had it all, big dunks, big shots, def passing, and some flashes of Patriot defense.  Most importantly nobody was injured or hurt with the exception of some veterans needing oxygen.  In the end the Patriot "White" team was able to walk away with a 5 point margin of victory.

The game came down to the wire as the "Red" team mounted a huge fourth quarter comeback.  With several lead changes throughout the game the "White" team took a slim lead in the third quarter and managed to extend it to 9 points early in the early going of the fourth.  But, the "Red" team refused to go away.

Quincy Williams, "Red" team and 2006 alum, had four fourth quarter steals to get his team back in the mix.  James Hicks from the "Red" squad led all players in blocks and rebounds on the night and was also able to muscle in two old fashioned 3pt. plays in the fourth for the red team. Ben Hoener, 2009 alum, also knocked down some big shots in the fourth to get the "Red" team back in the mix and eventually a slim lead.

After a few lead changes with just minutes to go in the contest Kelan Campbell of the "White" team and 2006 alum knocked down his first 3 pointer of the night to reclaim a 1 point advantage.  Kelan, also had 5 assists on the night including two to Fred Whitted, 2006 alum, in the first quarter.

Treymayne Garret, 1992 alum, then took charge of the ball and iced the game as the "Red" team could not overcome the huge momentum changing shot from Kelan Campbell.  Treymayne, showed he still had it, leading the "White" team in points (34) and rebounds (12), many on the offensive glass.

Chris Hoevel, "White" team and 2008 alum, chipped in 6 points.  Antonio Bryant had 8 points several deflections, steals, and rebounds.   Mark and John Wright, the talented brother combo added depth and savy to the "White" squad.  Phil Atkins led all players in the dunk category with four and Fred Whitted showed his hustle and energy on the boards and also added 8 points on the night.

The "Red" squad had a balanced scoring attack led by Julian Gilliam in the first half, driving past defenders and shooting over players.  Coach Howren hit from 3 as well as Mike Bertram and James Hicks.  Paulos Mengsteab, got in the action finishing shots on the break and Robert Adams and Joe Drago added to the mix.

Thanks to all for making the Third Annual Alumni Game a great event.
