PRATTVILLE DEFENSE STUFF BULLDOGS TWICE WITH GOAL LINE STAND
KALEN WHITLOW THROWS 92-YARD TOUCHDOWN PASS
Prattville’s Freshmen football team remained undefeated Monday night with a 27-0 win over the Opelika Freshmen team at Stanley-Jensen Stadium.
The Lions Cubs’ defensive team made two goal line stands to preserve the shutout, while the offense had a 92 touchdown pass from Kalen Whitlow to Ty Moore, and a 69-yard touchdown run by Eric Graham to improve to 5-0 with three games left on the 2011 schedule.
Prattville got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter after the defense had stymied an Opelika drive at the Lions’ 31yard line with a minute and 50 seconds left in the first quarter.
Eric Graham scooted around right end and broke clear at the 40-yard line after breaking two tackles in the Opelika secondary to race 69-yards for the first score.
Darnell Mann kicked the first of his three extra points for a 7-0 lead as the first quarter ended.
Prattville added another six pointer on their first possession of the second quarter.
After holding Opelika to three and out following Mann’s kickoff Prattville took over at its 41.
The Lions’ Cubs put together a six-play-59-yard drive with Tyler Godwin scoring with a blast over left tackle for a 14-0 lead. The highlight of the drive came on a 32-yard run by Graham around right end, and a 24-yard pass play from Whitlow to Daniel Seth Knotts.
Prattville was not finished for the first half. The Bulldogs went three and out following the kickoff and were forced to punt.
Eric Graham returned the punt 8-yards to the Prattville 48-yard line. On first down Whitlow hit Moore with a 36-yard aerial to the Opelika 14. Two plays later Whitlow found Moore in the end zone for a touchdown and 20-0 lead at halftime.
Prattville took the second half kickoff and put together a time consuming drive that ate up five minutes and 25 seconds of the third quarter. Although the Lions were unable to cash in the drive for points it did consume over one half of the quarter.
Whitlow had Keegan Smith open for a sure touchdown but overthrew him in the end zone. On the next play Wesley King had Seth Knotts open in the end zone for a touchdown, but the sure-handed Seth Knotts dropped the pigskin.
Opelika took over at its 35 and put together an impressive drive. The Bulldogs had a first down at the Lions 9-yard line as the quarter was nearing its end. Prattville’s stout defense held, and on fourth down Roderick Jackson recovered a Bulldog bobble at the Lion 8-yard line with 39.2 seconds left.
On first down Whitlow dropped back and hit the fleet Moore behind the Bulldogs secondary and Moore raced 92-yards for a score and a 27-0 lead.
Opelika made one more impressive drive and again came away with a broken heart. Taking over at its 11-yard line following Tripp Burnett’s 36-yard punt Opelika drove to a first down at the Prattville 9-yardline with 3:02 left in the game.
The Bulldogs moved to the 2-yardline and decided to attempt a pass play on fourth down. Prattville’s defense again turned the “Dawgs away, as Desmond Martin intercepted the attempt at the 2-yard line with 2:55 left in the game.
Prattville picked up two first downs to run out of the clock with the ball at Opelika’s 41. Wesley King made two crucial pass plays to keep the clock moving for the Lions. He hit Smith with a 14-yard pass from the 2-yardline, and then hit Matthew Droning with a 17-yard play good for a first down to the Opelika 44.
