D'ante Lawrence two baskets sink Mustangs
December 12, 2010By Jimmy White of Prattville High School
D'ante Lawrence paced the Prattville Boys' basketball team to an scintillating 67-63 win over their I-65 rivals from Millbrook's Stanhope Elmore High Thursday night in the Lions home opener at James Powell Gymnasium.
Lawrence scored 15 points to lead the way for the Lions; however, his final four points of the night were the most important as they broke a 63-63 tie with 33 seconds left to lift the Lions to the victory.
After Kordell Arrington had hit the bottom end of a one and one free throw opportunity to knot the game at 63-all, the Mustangs were ready to throw the ball in under the Lions' net.
The toss-in was intercepted by the Lions setting up the final seconds of the game. Prattville coach Xavier Robinson took a time out and set up a play. Arrington tossed the ball to Lawrence who drove down the lane for an easy lay-up and a 65-63 lead with 19 seconds left.
Rushing to get the ball in play the Mustangs' pass was erratic and landed in Lawrence's hand. He drove down the lane and put another 2-pointer off the glass into the nets as the buzzer sounded ending the game for a 67-63 win for Prattville.
With the victory Prattville improved to 1-1 for the season, but more important the win gave Prattville a 1-1 record in Class 6A Area 8 play. The Lions will return to Millbrook on January 21 for a rematch with the talented Mustangs.
As the fourth quarter began Stanhope Elmore held a 47-40 lead and quickly increased the lead to 53-44 with 6:02 to play. Lawrence then ignited a 12-2 Prattville run to take a 56-55 lead with 4:09 remaining. Quincy Myles broke the run to put the Mustangs back on top 57-56.
The lead then changed hands seven times with the Mustangs on top 63-62 with 58 seconds left. Arrington was fouled under the Lions' basket to set up the final heroics for Lawrence as he hit the bottom end of the one and one foul situation.
Prattville opened the game with a quick lead and a double digit 24-11 lead with 5:41 left in the first half, before the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run midway of the quarter to trim the lead to 24-20.
George Michael Rowe broke the run with a bucket down the base line as the second period began. However Jatorti Graves and Keonte Graves hit 2-pointers to knot the game at 26-all with 1:37 left in the half.
A slam dunk by Quincy Miles and a coast-to-coast trip by Justin Hollis sandwiched around a trey by Hollis gave the Mustangs a 33-32 lead at half time.
Hollis led all scorers with 27 points, followed by Terrance Jennings with 17 points and Myles with 10 points.
Jaylen Whitlow, Brandon Smith and Thomas Clark followed Lawrence in the scoring department for the Lions, all with nine points each.
