THOMPSON DEFEAT LIONS, 70-60 , KNOTS WETUMPKA FOR AREA CHAMPIONSHIP

THOMPSON KNOCKS OFF LIONS TO CLINCH TIE FOR AREA 7 CHAMPIONSHIP
For one quarter Friday night, January 24 the Prattville Lions boys’ basketball team was firing on all cylinders. Brandon Fisher took the opening tip and drained a trey from the corner for a quick lead.
The Lions’ defense held the Warriors’ offense scoreless for the next four minutes while Ty Moore and Josh Moore added two pointers. Fisher added a deuce in between for a 9-0 lead.
Thompson did not score until five minutes were left in the quarter with a trey from Rashad Strother. The Warriors won the final five minutes of the quarter, 14-3, but still Prattville was on top, 19-14.
Thompson opened the second period with a trey from Strother and a deuce from Tavarus Hall to knot the game. After a Lion turnover Hall blistered the net with a three-pointer from downtown to put the Warriors on top.
Thompson never relinquished the lead. The Warriors won the Area Seven Class 6A battle, 70-60, to clinch a tie for first place with Wetumpka. The Area coaches will get together Monday January 27 at Prattville High School to flip a coin and determine the seeds for the Area Tournament to be held February 4, 7 and 10.
The girls Area tournament will be played February 3, 6 and 8. The winners of the area tournaments them will advance to the Sub Regional to be held February 13-14 with the Regional tournaments set for February 18-22.
Prattville played the Warriors tough for the remainder of the game, but could never get closer than six points with 4:33 left in the final period.
At halftime Thompson led 30-24. The third period proved to be Prattville’s Waterloo.
Thompson’s Kevy Eason played string music with a trey from the corner following the toss-in to beginthe second half. A Lion turnover gave Zach Carnes an easy two-pointer under the nets and a 35-24 lead. Strother popped in another 2-pointer and suddenly the Warriors are up by double digits, 37-24.
Kingston Davis finally broke the run with a layup down the lane. The Lions were still battling an uphill battle with 4:15 left in the third quarter, 37-26.
Prattville coach Xavier Robinson took a timeout with 2:19 left and the Lions sputtering trailing 49-32.
Prattville had one more run left in the third quarter. Brandon Fisher fired a 3-pointer from side of the lane. It ignited an 11-1 run to end the third period with Thompson on top, 50-43.
However Prattville could never creep any close to the Warriors. Thompson won the final period 20-17. With 3:49 to play Davis was perfect on two free throws that cut the Warriors’ margin to 57-51.
Thompson outscored the Lions 13-9 the final three minutes.
Josh Moore’s 15-points was tops for Prattville, with Kingston Davis ending with 11 points and Brandon Fisher added ten points.
Thompson’s Rashad Strother led all scorers with 30 points, while Tavarus Hall added 12-points.
Thompson won the 2013-2014 series having defeated Prattville earlier in the season in Alabaster, 60-43.
