PRATTVILLE IN TOUGH LOSS TO MUSTANGS

Moody DeJarnette set the tone for the visiting Lady Mustangs of Stanhope Elmore High School Friday night January 17 at Powell Gymnasium in Prattville.

DeJarnette drained a long 3-pointer and added a free throw for a quick 4-0 lead following the opening tip.

It sparked a 9-0 run for the Mustangs to open play.

Stanhope Elmore never looked back en route to a 19-9 first period margin, and eventually winning rather handily, 64-36.  With the win the Lady Mustangs won the 2013-2014 series two games to none, having won earlier in Millbrook, 79-50.

Carson Haynes broke the Mustangs run with 5:39 left in the quarter with a deuce and seconds later hit a trey from the corner trimming the lead to 9-5.

However the Mustangs retaliated with a drive down the base line by Janae Raye and two free throws by Destiny Jackson to spark a 10-4 run to end the first period on top 19-9.

Coach Jerry Brown’s team played the talented Mustangs tough the second period, losing the quarter 16-11 to trail at halftime 37-20.

Jordan Stewart drained a trey from top of the key and Dazhanae Legette added two free throws to trim the lead to 21-14 with 6:13 left in the half.

Stanhope Elmore answered with a 10-0 run sparked by Victoria Harvey’s three baskets for a 31-14 lead with a minute left.

The Mustangs’ depth began to slowly wear on the Lions in the second half.   Stanhope Elmore’s defense held Prattville to three field goals in the third period, one by Alexis Nowak and two from Legette.

Stanhope Elmore led 50-26 at the close of the third period.

Prattville gave a yeoman’s effort in the fourth period, despite losing the quarter14-10.  Legette hit two from the charity stripe, Carson Haynes hit a 3-pointer from top of the key, Jordan Stewart had a deuce, Haynes connected with two free throws and Alexis Nowak tossed in a 2-pointer under the basket.

Stewart led the Lions with 11 points, followed by Legette with ten and Haynes with nine points.

DeJarnette led the Mustangs with 19 points followed by Raye with 13-points, and Victoria Harvey with ten, while Destiny Jackson added nine points.
