INDIANS THIRD QUARTER DOMINENCE DOOMS LIONS 83-72
Prattville boys basketball coach Xavier Robinson was all smiles for one half Friday night, January 10, at Powell Gymnasium as his Lions raced to a 40-31 first half lead.
Unfortunately the Lions apparently forgot that basketball is a four quarter game.
When the game was over, Robinson was not a happy camper.
Wetumpka came roaring back in the third quarter with a barrage of steals and dominated the boards to sent the Lions to a tough area 7 Class 6A defeat, 83-72.
Prattville started the game with a flurry as Brandon Fisher nailed a long 3-pointer to open play, and then Ty Moore got a steal on the toss in for an easy layup and a quick 5-0 lead.
By midway of the quarter Prattville had stretched the lead to 16-4 and appeared to be heading for a win in the Area 7 Class 6A standings.
Wetumpka finished the first quarter with a 10-8 advantage, but Prattville still held a double digit lead at 24-14.
Rodreka James brought the large gathering of Wetumpka fans to their feet as the second quarter began with a steal and a coast to coast slam dunk that shook the rafters.
With 5:17 remaining in the quarter James got another steal and another slam dunk to trim Prattville’s lead to four points, 26-22.
However the Lions regrouped with Kingston Davis hitting two of three free throws to ignite a 14-9 run to end the first half with Prattville on top 40-31.
The second half started badly for the Lions as Wetumpka went on a 9-0 run to start the quarter to knot the game at 40-all.
Brandon Fisher put the Lions back on top with a trey with 5:42 left in the quarter. James answered with a deuce trimming Prattville’s lead to 43-42. After a Prattville turnover Tyler Chance put Wetumpka on top with a long trey, 45-43.
The Indians had outscored Prattville 14-3 in 3 minutes and 30 seconds of the period.
Prattville did knot the game with 3:24 left in the third quarter at 47-all, only to see the Indians finish the period with a 7-4 advantage and a 54-51 lead.
Prattville’s only score during the final three minutes of the third quarter was a Ty Moore trey and a charity point from the free throw line by Davis.
The fourth quarter saw five ties with the final one coming with 3:19 left as Josh Moore hit two from the charity line to knot the game at 68-all.
Wetumpka then ended the game with a 15-4 run to win handily, 83-72.
Wetumpka’s Rodreka James finished with 35 points for high scorer. James’ teammates Tyler Chance and Nick Bozeman added 14 and 12 points respectively.
Brandon Fisher’s 25 points led the Lions followed by Ty Moore with 13.
