LIONS WIN ON FRIDAY THE 13TH
September 16, 2013By Jimmy White of Prattville High School
PRATTVILLE BEATS FRIDAY 13TH JINX BY ROLLING OVER LONG TIME RIVALS IN WETUMPKA
The long word and one that is difficult to pronounce –friggatriskaidekaphobia - which means the fear of Friday the 13th popped up on the Prattville Lions 2013 football schedule.
The 2013 game in Wetumpka would be played on the supposedly “unlucky day.” In checking the history of the Lions-Indians rivalry it was revealed that Friday the 13th has been an unlucky day for Prattville when they have played Wetumpka. Prattville and Wetumpka had battled twice on Friday 13th prior to last week’s encounter.
The Lions were defeated in both games.
They were –
November 13, 1931 at Wetumpka. – Wetumpka 52 Prattville 0 - Rex McKissick, Ripper Roberts, and Earl Thrash had big games for the Indians. Thrash scored four touchdowns and kicked three extra points
About the only highlight for the Lions was a 65-yard run to the Wetumpka 10-yard line by Graham Musgrove. Prattville couldn’t punch the ball in as Wetumpka’s defense held.
Before the season was over Musgrove’s football career would be ended with a broken leg. But not on a Friday the 13th.
September 13th 1956 – While this was not Friday the 13th, it was Thursday. Prattville was scheduled to play in Wetumpka on Friday the 14th, but the game was moved to Thursday the 13th by mutual agreement. Prattville coach Fred Jensen and Wetumpka coach Jack Ray wanted to scout their next opponent.
Prattville would face Herb Chapman’s Holtville Bulldogs, while Wetumpka would face Hayneville.
Maybe it would have been best if the Lions had played on Friday. Wetumpka defeated Prattville 18-6.
Apparently the scouting of Holtville paid off for Prattville. The Lions defeated Herb Chapman’s Bulldogs the next week, 12-0. Bobby Boone gave the Lions a 6-0 lead with touchdown in the first half. Edwrad Jackson added the second score in the second half.
Ironically seven years later Chapman would be the head coach at Prattville.
Marion Boggs, Bobby Glass, Tommy Walker, Lomax Howell, Terry Stanfield, and Roy Grant stood out in the line for Prattville.
Wetumpka also won their second game by defeating Hayneville, 28-7.
September 13, 1963 – Wetumpka 20 Prattville 7 - Friday the 13th was unlucky for the Lions down in Pratt Park. Ed Riddle scored the lone Lion touchdown after an interception by Paul Sullivan carried deep into Wetumpka territory. Danny Seamon kicked the extra point.
Interesting tidbit Willis Bradford became the executive director of the newly formed Prattville YMCA in the fall of 1963.
Herb Chapman was in his third year as the head coach. He was assisted by Horace Powell, Lee Holladay, and Bob Elia.
All three games were played before the school changed its name from Autauga County High to Prattville High.
Interesting facts about Friday the 13th – Biblical – Jesus Christ was crucified and Cain killed his brother Abel, on a Friday; and Judas was the 13th guest at the Last Supper.
The producer of so many horror movies Alfred Hitchcock was born on Friday the 13th. Many high rise building skip the 13th floor and a lot of Hospitals do not have a room 13.
Two current Lion football players have no fear of the number 13 Derrick Gappa and Lamar Lawson both wear number 13.
Hey, Halloween is around the corner, but there is no Friday 13th in November this year. There is one in December, so start to be good and be very careful on December 13th.
