NESHAMBIA SEWELL, BRIANNA JONES & RACHEL SHEPPERD HONORED ON SENIOR NIGHT
Virginia Kerger’s Prattville Lady Lions closed out their regular season schedule Friday night February 3 at Powell Gymnasium with a resounding thumbing of the Hayneville Central High Lady Lions, 66-42.
With the victory the Lions ended their regular season with a 9-15 record. Prattville will face Benjamin Russell High’s Lady Wildcats in the Area 8 Class 6A tournament to be held at Wetumpka High School February 9th and 11th.
The Lions will square off with Benjamin Russell at 6 p.m. with Wetumpka and Stanhope Elmore to follow. The winners will then play Saturday night February 11th for the Area Eight championship with both teams advancing to the sub-Regional finals.
The two teams spilt the 2011-2012 regular season tilts. Prattville won at home on December 15, 42-39, and lost in Alexander City, 40-30 on January 6.
Friday night Central's Lions battled the Prattville Lions on even terms for the first four minutes. Prattville took a quick 5-0 lead on senior night. It was appropriate that senior Rachel Shepperd gave the Lions a quick 2-0 lead. Junior Daniele Ewert made it 5-0 quickly with a trey from top of the circle.
Bridgetjae Patterson’s snowbird deuce gave the Lions a 7-7 tie with 4:03 left in the period. Patterson’s bucket ignited the Lions to a 15-2 run and a 20-9 lead at the close of the quarter. A trey by Dazhanae Leggette and a three point play the hard way by Kali Grove were the highlights of the run.
By halftime Prattville had increased the lead to 36-21. The Lions also won the third quarter to establish a 50-34 lead.
Prattville wrapped up the win in the fourth quarter with Kristin Coleman, Ewert, Patterson, and Grove all getting points.
Ewert led the Lions with 21-points and 12- boards for another double-double, despite sitting for several minutes with her fourth foul late in the third quarter. Kali Grove finished with 15-points for one of her best games in her career, while senior Brianna Jones ended with 8-points on senior night and Jae Patterson added six points.
Latasha Coleman led Hayneville Central with 18 points followed by Kendreuna McPherson with 16 points.
At halftime head coach Virginia Barber-Kerger presented the Lions three seniors with roses and hearty thanks for their four year career as Lady Lions. Neshambia Sewell, Rachel Shepperd and Brianna Jones are the three seniors on the 2011-2012 team.
It was a nice farewell for the three seniors, as all three scored in their final regular season game at Powell Gymnasium. As the years roll by all three can look back at their careers at PHS and what a way to end it with a win and each tossing in points.
