“This was definitely a big win for us,” Peabody coach Anthony Hicks said. “Our quarterback is growing up for us as he is just a sophomore.”
Kirklin, the Peabody quarterback, and his receiver Boss helped the Warhorses stage an early comeback in the first half after Menard raced out to an early 13-0 lead.
To start the comeback, Kirklin hit Boss on a swing pass, and Boss raced up the sideline for an 80-yard touchdown. Kirklin threw another touchdown strike in the second quarter to tie the game at 13.
Peabody grabbed the lead in the third quarter after Kirklin scampered in from 9 yards out, and he threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Boss to extend the lead, 26-13, on the next series.
“With our history, we were thinking the second half is our half, but tonight some things happened to us and things went downhill from there,” Menard coach Freddie Hallman said. “They are awesome guys over there. I think coach Hicks has that program going in the right direction.”
The Kirklin-Boss duo added two more fourth-quarter touchdowns, including one where Boss leaped high and barely got one foot down to seal the game for Peabody.
“We are working on that tempo offense” Hicks said. “We are working on tempo, tempo, tempo and we about got it.”
Kirklin finished the game with 250 passing yards and five touchdowns, while Boss had five catches for 162 yards and four touchdowns. Kelvaughn Hayes led Menard with 169 rushing yards and a touchdown.
