Pinecrest High School

By Charlie Bergmann The Pilot

The Pinecrest girls came from 15-points behind in the third quarter to grab a shocking 49-48 victory over Seventy-First at James Moore Gym Tuesday evening.

The winning basket came on a 12-foot jumper from the right side by sophomore Felicia Painter with just under a minute remaining in the game. Jenny Joy led the comeback at both ends of the court, finishing with 18 points, nine steals and five assists.

Janea Williams was a powerful force on the boards for the Pats down the stretch. The sophomore grabbed nine of her 18 rebounds and scored six of her eight points in the fourth period. Painter finished with 12 points and nine boards.

The Patriots fell behind 12-2 after the first five minutes of the game and it was an uphill battle the rest of the way. Shaniqua Collins drained a three to complete a 6-0 run at the end of the third period that cut the Falcon lead to 38-30.

The two teams traded baskets throughout much of the fourth quarter before the home side made its big move. Ashleigh McKenzie fed Williams for an inside basket that made it 48-45 with two minutes remaining in the game.

Joy scored off another pass from McKenzie at the 1:20 mark. Painter's jumper off a pass from Joy gave the Patriots their only lead of the game at 49-48.

The Falcons then turned the ball over. They fouled the Patriots three times, hoping to send them to the foul line, but couldn't get to the seventh foul as the clock wound down. They got the ball back on a Patriot turnover with 4.3 seconds remaining, but turned it right back.

Coupled with Monday's victory at Jack Britt the Patriots will take a 2-0 record into next Tuesday's home game against Red Springs. Seventy-First dropped to 1-1.

The Patriot boys (1-1) were unable to build on Monday's success at Jack Britt. They never led in falling 57-49 to the Falcons in Tuesday's night cap.

Antonio Jones led the home team with 14 points. Phillip Wallace added nine points and Faronte' Drakeford contributed eight points to go with 13 rebounds. Joshua Megginson led the Falcons (2-0) with 17 points.
