Patriot Grapplers Claim SEC Title

The Pinecrest Varsity wrestling team won 1st place in the Southeastern Conference when they beat Hoke High School 57-18 in their last conference meet on Wednesday, February 1st and remained undefeated with a 5-0 record. The Patriots won their previous conference meets against Purnell Sweet 50-27, Lumberton 72-6, Scotland 56-20, and Richmond 66-9. They are ranked #2 in the Retrorankings Coaches Dual poll just behind Parkland High School.
At Hoke High School, the Pats got off to a slow start after a couple of jayvee matches with a 6 point loss at 195 to the Bucks but quickly evened the score with a Hoke forfeit at 220. Pinecrest junior Luke Fetla (42-2), ranked #3 in the 4A division at 220, bumped up to face Darrius Wirt in the 285 weight class and gave the Pats another 6 points on the board with a pin at 1:08 into the second period. Hoke earned another three at 106 before Patriot senior Zac Lupien (32-13), wrestling 113, pinned Karon Johnson in 1:21 in the first period and put 6 more on the board for his team. At 120, junior Cody Fitzgerald (18-15) battled it out with Hoke's Austin Rivera to win a close 10-9 decision match and another 3 points for Pinecrest. The Patriots earned 12 more points on the board when freshman Dakotah Nelson(18-18), at 126, and sophomore Dallas Roemer (40-4), ranked #4 in the 4A division at 132, pinned both their opponents in the first period, Nelson over Kyle Lohman in 1:54 and Roemer over Ryan Cervantes-Garcia in 16 seconds.
Hoke earned another 6 points at 138 then gave up 6 when they forfeited 145 bringing the score to 39 for Pinecrest and 15 for Hoke. Pinecrest captain, senior Dustin Roemer (40-0), ranked #1 in the 4A division at 152, worked some takedown and nearfall moves before pinning Lucas Hardin at 1:29. At 160, sophomore Rider Excell (40-5), ranked #4 in the 4A division, pinned Hoke's Robert Turner at 1:42. The Buck's earned their last 3 points with a close 11-10 decision at 170 before Pinecrest sophomore Bryson Thomas (12-6), wrestling 182, pinned Joey Crenshaw in 1:12 for a final 6 points.
The Patriots have earned the Southeastern Conference spot in the State Team Duals which will start on Tuesday evening, February 7th, at Pinecrest High School. Before they participate in the State Duals, Pinecrest will travel to Hoke again this Saturday, February 4th to compete in the Conference Individual Tournament.
