It was Senior Night at Pinecrest High School on Wednesday, January 25th, where four wrestlers were celebrated before the conference meet against Richmond High School. Seniors Dustin Roemer and Garret Bateman, both team captains, were described by their Head Coach as "great leaders, and that how well the team has done this season was a direct reflection of their dedication." Coach Travis Flinchum is referring to the Patriot's current #2 ranking, in the 4A division, as a tournament team which is based on the six wrestlers from Pinecrest who are ranked in the top 5 in the state in their weight class, including the two captains. Coach Flinchum felt that senior Zac Lupien "as one of the better technical wrestlers in the lighter weight classes, has been able to help many of his younger teammates benefit from his knowledge and experience" and he noted the importance of senior Calvin Farlow as "a team player who was willing to give a big weight advantage to his opponents in the heavyweight class because that was where the team needed him."
The meet began at the 120 weight class where Richmond took a quick 6 point lead with a pin before Pinecrest freshman Dakota Nelson (13-16) proved his metal with a big win over junior Randall Altman (25-11) with a 1:18 pin at at 126. The Pats earned 12 more points with Richmond forfeits at 132 and 138 before junior Sawyer Bateman (22-10) stepped up and earned another Patriot 6 with a 2:55 pin over Raider junior Devonte Watkins (26-8). At 152, #1 ranked Dustin Roemer (33-0) pinned junior Cory Covington (13-8) at 1:23 and at 160, #4 ranked sophomore Rider Excell (34-5) pinned junior Austin Lane (14-19) at 1:10, bringing the scoreboard to 36-6 with Pinecrest in the firm lead.
Pinecrest junior Ryan Mcguire (21-15) wrestled a smart match at 170 to win a 3-2 decision over junior Jacob Staub (19-3) and earn the team another 3 points on the scoreboard. Junior Jonah Caliri (8-5), at 182, and sophomore Bryson Thomas (7-4), at 195, both wrestled up two weight classes in the Patriot varsity lineup and showed their tenacity with wins over Richmond, Caliri pinned junior Dion Spencer (17-11) at 1:25 and Thomas won a 11-4 decision over junior Deon Davis, and another 9 points for Pinecrest. Junior Luke Fetla (35-2), ranked #3 at 220, pinned Raider senior Dillon King (18-8) at 2:19 and earned the Pats another 6 before heading over to Mike Martin of Moore Sports Radio for his live interview at the event.
Richmond was able to earn their last three points at heavyweight before Pinecrest closed out the meet with pins in the last two weight classes of the meet. At 106, #4 ranked freshman Irvin Enriquez pinned Richmond freshman Gary Blue in 15 seconds, the fastest pin of the night, and at 113, Zac Lupien pinned freshman Dadriene Davis at 3:10 to bring the final score to 66- 9 and keeping the Patriots undefeated in the conference.
Pinecrest will travel to South Durham this Saturday to compete in the Spartan 300 Dual Team Tournament before competing against Hoke at their final conference match on Wednesday, Feb 1st.
