Patriot Grapplers Claim Mustang Title

The Pinecrest varsity wrestlers earned a 1st place finish at the Mustang Stampede Individual Tournament held at Middle Creek High School in Apex this past Saturday, January 14th. The Pats earned the top honor with 142.5 points and finished with 5 wrestlers placing in the top 4 of their weight class. First place champions of the tournament were captain Dustin Roemer (33-0), junior Luke Fetla (35-2) and sophomore Rider Excell (34-5). Sophomore Dallas Roemer (33-4) placed 2nd, junior Jonah Caliri (8-5) tied for 3rd and senior Calvin Farlow (11-6) earned 4th.
Dustin Roemer, wrestling 152, won his first match against Kyle Brown of Middle Creek with a Fall at :55, his second match against Colin Higgins of Panther Creek with a 12-0 major decision, and his final match against #3-4A ranked JacQuan Ethridge of Clayton with a 15-0 tech fall. Luke Fetla, wrestling 220, beat Louisburg High School's Julian Faulkner with a 1:29 Fall, Josh Huskey of Union Pines with a 8-4 decision, and Panther Creek's Aaron Chan with a 11-2 major decision. Rider Excell, wrestling 160, won all three of his matches with pins over Cameron Shaffer of Panther Creek at 3:35, Aaron Roper of West Johnston at 2:45, and Jeremy Kerzner of Wakefield at 3:30.
At 132, Dallas Roemer pinned Tierre Davis of Heritage High School in 34 seconds and won a 5-2 decision over Ryan Hull of Union Pines. At 182, Jonah Caliri pinned Croatan's Caleb Carpenter at 2:45, won a 19-4 tech fall over Athens Drive High School's Mahmoud Ghuweir, and had 3-2 decision wins over Zarek Stafford of Leesville Road High School and Dominique Mims of Southern Durham. Wrestling heavyweight, Calvin Farlow pinned Ben Lackey of Apex at 2:42, won a 4-2 decision over Croatan's Johnathon Rigsby, and a 9-3 decision over Gary Whitaker of Riverside.
Other Pinecrest varsity wrestlers who competed and added points to the overall score were freshman Dakotah Nelson at 126, junior Ryan Mcguire at 170, senior Zac Lupien at 113, junior Sawyer Bateman at 145, sophomore Kellen Winingham at 195, and freshman Ben Remington at 120. Dakotah Nelson won a 14-7 decision over Matt Delacruz of Leesville Road High School, and pinned Matt Sarachaga of Grimsley at 2:19 and Raheem Simmons of West Johnston at 4:18. Ryan Mcguire pinned Saul Vargas of Corinth Holders High School at 1:34, and won 6-2 decisions over Wakefield's Kenson McFarlane and Leesville's Jackson Tucker. Zac Lupien pinned Taylor Williams of West Johnston at 1:42 and Dustin Brennan of Corinth Holders at 4:33. Sawyer Bateman won a 14-6 major decision over Matt Duncan of Corinth Holders, Kellen Winingham beat Tahj Spivey of Southern Durham with a 7-3 decision, and Ben Remington pinned Croatan's Dustin McCaw at 2:16.
The Patriots will be back home for an in conference meet at Pinecrest High School against Richmond on Wednesday, January 25th at 6pm. This is their last home conference meet for the season so come and support your Pinecrest grapplers!
