PHOENIX — The Phoenix football team owned a slight lead entering the fourth quarter against Mazama on Friday night, but the Pirates couldn't hang on in a 20-12 loss.
Phoenix running back Jesus Meraz's 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Phoenix a 12-10 lead in the Skyline Conference contest, but a Trevor Garrard 28-yard field goal and Marquise Idrogo 45-yard touchdown run put the Vikings ahead for good in the fourth.
With about 37 seconds remaining in the first half, Phoenix quarterback Justin McCreadie threw a 7-yard TD pass to Riley Driscoll that gave the Pirates (0-5, 0-2 Skyline) a 6-3 lead.
On the night, Meraz tallied 49 rushing yards on six carries. His scoring run capped an eight-play, 68-yard drive against Mazama (2-3, 1-1 Skyline).
