Pirates come up short for title

The Hidden Valley boys track and field team captured the Skyline Conference district championship with Jefferson Jarvis' help, while the Henley girls edged the Mustangs by just two points for first at Southern Oregon University on Saturday.

The Mustang boys won with 155 points, North Valley was second (142) and Klamath Union third (103).

On the girls side, the Hornets earned 174 points, Hidden Valley 172 and Klamath Union 131.

Hidden Valley qualified 14 individuals and Phoenix will send four and a relay team to the state competition, which begins Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The Phoenix boys 4x400-meter relay team eked out a thrilling victory over Klamath Union. Running the fourth and final leg, Max Hamilton sealed it for the Pirates in a photo finish, 3 minutes, 30.28 seconds to 3:30.41.

The other members of the Phoenix relay were Mario Esqueda, Antonio Gil Juarez and Jorge Gil Juarez.

Gil Juarez won the 1,500 in 4:09. He claimed the 3,000 on Thursday.

Esqueda won the 200 (23.29) and Hamilton defended his title in the 800, winning in 2:00.98.

Jarvis won the shot put and discus for Hidden Valley. The junior eclipsed his Class 4A best in the shot and broke the meet record (set in 1991) with an effort of 59 feet, 81/2 inches. He won the discus at 173-9.

Teammate Buck Broadhead took first in the long jump (21-11/2) and triple jump (43-03/4).

On the girls side, Henley pulled out a key victory in the 4x400 relay and Alyssa Castle set a personal record in the 100 hurdles (15.96).

Elizabeth Venzon won the long jump (16-91/2), triple jump (34-91/2) and high jump (5-3) and took second in the javelin (110-4) for Hidden Valley. Her high jump is a school record.

Teammate Ali Rodgers set the school record in the 300 hurdles (48.26), Sierra Brown won the 1,500 (4:49.90) and Bailey Bars was victorious in the javelin (122-4).

Phoenix's Lindsey Vermillion garnered the 800 (2:28.14).
