GRANTS PASS — Alyse Darnall had a hand in four victories and Lauren Speaks was in on three to lead the Phoenix girls in a five-way swim meet at the Grants Pass YMCA Kickoff Invitational Tuesday.

The Pirates placed third with 237 points, behind Henley (343) and Grants Pass (253).

In the boys meet, Phoenix was second with 229.

Darnall, a junior who had two top-five individual placings at state last year, captured the 500-yard freestyle in 5:40.31, narrowly beating Henley's Leta Spradley, who clocked 5:41.63.

Darnall also won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.85 and swam on both of the Pirates' winning relay teams.

Speaks was on the relays as well — along with Olivia Sanchez and Kylee Burks — and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.63.

For the Pirates boys, Ethan Shepherd was second in the 50 free (25.78).

The Phoenix 200 free relay of Taylor Brown, Eddie Stewart, Jasper Schurman and Nick Leiter was second.
