CRESCENT CITY, Calif. — Amanda Skaff provided a lot of energy coming off the bench and scored a career-high 17 points to help Phoenix capture its girls basketball season opener Tuesday.

The Pirates used a spurt early in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 49-46 victory against Del Norte.

"In the first half we played timid," said Phoenix coach Randy Kirkland. "We came back from being down and stayed calm and ran through our sets."

Skaff, a junior guard, also contributed three steals and three assists after entering the game in the second quarter. Additionally, she hit some pressure free throws down the stretch.

Phoenix senior Delanie Tally had four steals and four assists, and the Pirates came up with 13 steals overall.

"(Skaff) injected a lot of life offensively and defensively," said Kirkland. "She and Delanie Tally provided a lot of pressure at the top of our zone."

Bailee Tally, a Phoenix sophomore guard, tossed in 12 points and junior Baylee Toney pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

The Pirates went up by eight points early in the fourth quarter and connected on 9 of 10 free throws in the period to preserve the lead. Skaff hit all four of her free throws in the quarter and Bailee Tally was 3-for-4.

"Our defensive pressure, especially by our guards, made all the difference in the world," said Kirkland.
