Pirates Sweep Mazama

PHOENIX — The Phoenix softball team used some late-game heroics to sweep Mazama and leapfrog the Vikings in the Skyline Conference standings on Saturday.

The Pirates, who entered the twin bill standing in third place in the league race, took over second and assured themselves a home game in the Class 4A state play-in round with the sweep. They will host Brookings on Thursday.

Phoenix (19-6, 8-4 Skyline) won the opener 3-1 and prevailed 5-4 in Game 2.

In the first game, Meranda Zanni hit a solo home run to put the Pirates ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Phoenix evened the scored in the first on a Mazama error.

Hailey Wyncoop went 2-for-3 for the Pirates in Game 1.

In the second game, Phoenix rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ashlyn Flynn's go-ahead RBI single plated Wyncoop and put the Pirates ahead 5-4. Before that, Makayla Scoggins' two-run triple scored Zanni and Delanie Tally. Scoggins finished 2-for-3.

Kaitlyn Pinner was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in Game 2 for Mazama (15-7, 7-5).
