PHOENIX — Defense was the name of the game for the Phoenix girls basketball team Friday night against Skyline Conference foe Hidden Valley.

Spearheaded by sophomore Baylee Toney, the Pirates held the visiting Mustangs scoreless in the first quarter and limited them to seven field goals overall in a 35-23 victory at Phoenix High.

Toney, a 5-foot-8 post, shadowed Hidden Valley's leading scorer Jenna King and got help-side support from her teammates to slow the Mustangs, who managed 11 points through three quarters.

Toney also managed to net seven points and pull down 10 rebounds, while 5-7 junior point guard Delanie Tally had 10 points, six steals and four assists for the Pirates (8-8, 2-3 Skyline). Roxy Ramirez and Kasey Hamilton also had six points for Phoenix.

King was limited to four points for Hidden Valley (2-16, 1-4), with Katelyn Lambert scoring six points.

PHOENIX (35) — Ramirez 6, D. Tally 10, B. Tally 2, Hamilton 6, Marshall 3, Toney 7, Skaff 1, Brown 0, McAlister 0, Serrano 0, Macias 0, Martinez 0. Totals: 12 8-18 35.
