Thursday night the Perry County Central Commodores packed the bus and traveled to Whitesburg to take on the Letcher Central Cougars. The Commodores got off to a hot start, and then went ice cold. A strong finish, however, lifted the Commodores to the 54-35 win.
The Commodores came out of the gates with all guns a blazing. Perry Central connected on nearly every shot they took in the first four minutes of the game, giving them a double-digit lead early. Perry Central ended the period with a convincing 24-11 lead.
In the second quarter, the lid was clamped down tight on the goal on the Perry Central end of the floor. The Commodores then had to rely on a stingy defense to keep the Cougars at bay. Perry Central scored but four points in the period, but still went into the locker room sitting on a 28-17 lead.
The two teams battled tooth and nail throughout the third period, with Letcher Central cutting the lead to just six points late in the period. However, Perry Central took control near the end of the period, and put their 11-point margin back on the board (38-27).
The fourth quarter belonged entirely to the Commodores as they pushed the margin over 20-points. The rally was sparked by a series of dunks by Jaysean Paige, made possible by some excellent passing from the backcourt. The Commodores went on to win the game by the final tally of 54-35.
Braxton Beverly led the Commodores in scoring with 20 points, while the Perry Central defense did not allow a single Cougar to score in double digits.
Perry Central (54) Braxton Beverly 20, Jaysean Paige 15, Trevor Combs 2 and Dalton Cornett 17.
Letcher Central (35) Logan Johnson 7, Koree Stuart 7, Kendall Ballou 8, Matt Boggs 2, Cody Gregory 4,and Trenton Whitaker 7.
