Pecatonica, Ill. -
The Pecatonica volleyball team may have lost the first game, but the momentum had clearly shifted in the Indians' eyes.
After Aquin nearly dropped the first game by giving up an 11-point lead, the Indians earned leads in the final two games and staved off the Bulldogs's chances of any comeback and won in three games, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17.
"That was a bit of a momentum shift in the middle of the match," Pecatonica coach Jessica Berg said. "It helped us get going in the second and third sets. It seems to be a Monday night curse that we have. We start slow on Mondays and then we finally get it going after a while.
"I'm not quite sure."
The Bulldogs had to have felt cursed after nearly dropping a 24-13 first-game lead. Aquin committed five errors and gave up two aces during Pecatonica's comeback.
Both aces came from Lacey Busby (three aces), and Chelsea Anderson knocked down a pair of kills during the Indians' rally.
Aquin held on to its slim 24-23 lead and escaped with the first game after a block by Cayla Claussen went wide and out of bounds.
Pecatonica took over in the second game after earning a 12-4 lead. Aquin coach Michele Morrison thought the team struggled because of a few controversial lift penalties that went against the Bulldogs.
