McGee takes state title

Pass Christian\'s Cory McGee won the Class 4A state individual title in cross country on Saturday at Mississippi College in Clinton. It was her fifth state championship in six attempts in cross country.

She posted at time of 14:35.40.

Later in the afternoon, St. Patrick won the Class 3A girls state championship with 31 points, besting runner-up Ripley that had 64 points.


Our Lady Academy captured the Class 2A girls state championship with 19 points.


In Class 1A, Myrtle won the state title while Resurrection of Pascagoula was second. Myrtle amassed 32 points and Resurrection had 59.


Team-wise, Myrtle won the Class 4A girls state title. Pass Christian finished third. despite not having two of their top five runners at the meet.


McGee, a senior, has fought some illness this season.

"This year, this is one of my better races,\'\' McGee said. "I\'ve been sick the last couple of weeks and was in the hospital for a couple of days. It was some kind of brochitis. I haven\'t run in that many meets this year.\'\'


Her sister Devin, who finished 11th overall, joined her on the 4A all-state team.


Tupelo swept the Class 6A boys and girls team titles, with 54 and 49 points, respectively.


Saltillo won the Class 5A girls team title while Pearl took the 5A boys title with 36 points.

Shannen Weyer of Biloxi finished third in the 6A girls, while Hancock\'s Derek Westbrook netted a sixth-place finish.
