Survive and Return Summer School
June 16, 2014By Kathryn Roby of Park High School AFJROTC
What are you doing this summer? Would you like to do something that is fun, meet new people, and learn skills that might save your life? Consider taking the Air Force JROTC or summer academy course, “Survive and Return.” It is a two week summer school class that will be offered through Park High School but taught jointly with Woodbury High School JROTC instructors. This class will be held at Woodbury High School for two weeks from 4 Aug - 15 Aug, three hours a day, Monday through Friday, 8:30-11:30. In addition, a two night camping event is planned for the evenings of 13 and 14 August at Lake Elmo Regional Park. The name of the course is “Survive and Return,” the course number is SS0002 and it is open to district 833 students (Park, Woodbury, and Eastridge High School) in grades 9-12. There is no cost associated with the class but a small $10 fee will be collected for those who participate in the two day camping portion of the class. In addition, successful completion of the class will earn one elective credit towards high school graduation requirements.
The course is taught with input from various military survival experts and instructors. It contains a review of basic survival information found in military survival training courses with extensive practical hands on instruction. Sample topics include: survival medicine, finding food and water, building a personal survival kit, making fire, emergency shelter, orientation and map reading, travel, signaling, and preparing for recovery. Additional emphasis is placed on leadership, personal development skills and fitness.
