Soccer Greyhounds Defeat Walton-Verona

September 18, 2012
Paris High School

WITH A LITTLE HELP – PARIS WINS #7

In normal fashion, Paris went ahead early on the Walton-Verona Bearcats Thursday night.  Paris took the ball inside the 18” within the first five minutes and a shot by Senior Kullen Fryer was deflected to the back post area.  As two Paris players closed in, a Walton-Verona defender tried to play the ball back across the goal box and scored an own-goal to give the Hounds the quick edge.

The game became a defensive battle for the Greyhounds as Walton-Verona maintained a significant edge in possession time.  Defensive players, Juniors Blanton Park and Deantre Landrum, as well as Sophomores Ricardo Rodriguez and Garrett West kept the Bearcats from having few clean shots.  Senior goal keeper Logan West had another spectacular game and had eight stops on the night and recorded his third clean sheet of the year.

Paris Coach, Bill Gibson believed playing the 7-4-1 Walton-Verona team was going to be a tough test not only because of their record, but also because they had 12 seniors on their roster.  “It wasn’t one of our best efforts offensively, but we tend to win on defense.  We just don’t have the personnel that can put up more than one or two goals against quality opponents.  If we can get a goal in, and our defense is on their game, we always have a shot at the win.” Said the Coach.

Paris improves to 7-4-2 on the season and will have its last regular season district match against Montgomery County on Monday.
