Cal, an un-athletic teen, makes the decision to follow in a family tradition: wrestling. Skinny Cal isn't built like his father or brother, who were state champions, and he starts to feel like he's in over his head. His mother, Sharon (Patricia Clarkson) doesn't approve at all, but local fisherman Harry "Red" Newman (Danny Glover) gives him some of the encouragement he needs to get back to the mat. Soon, after many lost matches, Cal begins to think that quitting would be for the best, so he begins to seek out his brother, Mike, to help him out; however first Cal needs to help Mike.
