The High Plains Division’s annual Summit awards recognized the best of the best in Relay For Life across the Division. The Society awarded the The Relay for Life of Centralia with the Youth Rookie Event Award during the special awards ceremony with more than 900 Relayers in attendance. This award is presented to a first year youth sponsored Relay For Life event within the Division with the top net income raised overall. The Relay netted a total of $29,944 and had over 27 teams participate. The Relay welcomed over 40 survivors who helped kick off the nights festivities by participating in our Survivor Lap to open the Relay. “We are very proud and excited for our Relayers in Centralia,” said Jessica Ellison, Community Manager for the American Cancer Society. “Everyone worked extremely hard to make this Relay For Life event successful, and this award is proof that their work paid off.” Relayers took part in informative general sessions highlighting Division and Region accomplishments and new leadership and fundraising training sessions where they acquired the skills needed to implement a successful Relay event in their local communities. “For more than 29 years Relay has given cancer survivors, cancer patients, caregivers, family, friends and entire communities a place where their voices can be heard in the fight against cancer,” said Ellison. Relay brings together more than 3.5 million people to participate in a life-changing event, which has raised a total of more than $4.5 billion to fund the American Cancer Society’s mission. At Relay, attendees have the opportunity to celebrate those who have won their cancer battle, remember those lost and fight back against a disease that takes too much. “Dollars raised through Relay For Life help support the American Cancer Society’s mission of eliminating cancer by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back,” added Charla Dickerson, faculty advisor for the students as well as Chair of the 2012 Relay.
