The needed script for a Paint Valley upset started to write itself Friday night as the Bearcats took the opening drive down for a score - a 35 TD run by senior Ben Krech, held ZT to a field goal - a 37-yard FG by Nick Ganus, and then was knocking on the door of a possible 14-3 lead. Paint Valley, up 7-3, had it deep in ZT territory when they turned it over on downs. On the ensuing possession, Zane Trace quarterback Kirk Maxwell broke loose for an 89-yard scoring run. All of a sudden, what was starting to look like a possible two-score advantage for the Bearcats was now a 10-7 lead for Zane Trace.

A short time later, Maxwell and the Pioneers were on the move again. This drive was capped off by a Maxwell to Gabe Haynes scoring strike from six yards out to give ZT a 17-7 lead - a lead they had entering the half.

After the half, the ball belonged to Zane Trace once again, and once again, Maxwell was off and running. Some hard running from Ben Jones helped move the ball down to the Paint Valley 26 yard line when Maxwell turned in the highlight run of the night with a TD run that put the Pioneers up 24-7.

The final nail in the coffin came on the first play of the fourth quarter when Maxwell scored from one yard out to stretch the lead to 31-7. Fullback Chris Finley added a late score for Zane Trace.

On the night, Maxwell recorded a ridiculous stat line. The senior signal caller rushed 11 times for 225 yards and three scores. He also threw for 80 yards and a score. The Pioneers received great contribution from the entire offensive unit. Ben Jones ran hard all night totaling 79 yards on 18 rushes. Ganus also enjoyed another perfect night as he made good on his one FG attempt, all five PATs, and he continued to hammer kickoffs deep into the end zone to neutralize the great Paint Valley return game.

In the loss for PV, Krech was outstanding on the ground in his final high school game as he scored his team's only touchdown. Wes Parker, another PV senior, added 23 rushes for 88 yards.

Paint Valley's Chris Medved calls the defense for the Bearcats for the final time
Longtime coach stepping away from the sideline

Personal Note: I want to congratulate Paint Valley defensive coordinator Chris Medved on a great career. Coach Medved is calling it quits after a long period of time of calling the Paint Valley defense. I personally spent several years coaching with Coach Medved on the baseball diamond, and I can assure all the SVC fans that you will not find a classier, more respected person or coach.
