All Star Weekend
The NBA All Star game has been around since 1951 and has also been a favorite event among NBA fans during All Star weekend. Accompanying the All Star game was the Celebrity game, the Rising Stars Challenge, the Shooting Stars, the Skills Challenge, the 3 point Contest, and the Slam Dunk Contest.
First was the Celebrity game on Friday. The Celebrity game consisted of celebrities playing in a basketball game, mostly for entertainment instead of an actual struggle to win. The West managed to beat the East with a score of 58-38 and Kevin Hart wins his second straight MVP in this game.
The next game was the Rising Stars Challenge. The Rising Stars Challenge was a game that consisted of this year's Rookies and last year's Rookies. Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley chooses the teams by going through a draft with the top 10 Rookies and top 10 Sophomores. The teams are then named Team Shaq and Team Chuck. Team Chuck won the game 163-135 with Kenneth Faried getting the MVP trophy.
The next night, the Shooting Stars took place. The Shooting Stars is a contest where you have to make 6 shots from different locations on the floor. There are 4 teams consisting of 3 players each: One NBA player, one WNBA player, and one NBA legend. The teams competing were Team Harden, Team Westbrook, Team Lopez, and Team Bosh. Team Bosh came out victorious with a time of 89 seconds.
After the Shooting Stars, the Skills Challenge was next. The Skills Challenge is where 6 players attempt an obstacle course of dribbling around cones, bounce passing, chest passing and shooting. The player with the best time wins. The competitors were Damian Lillard, Tony Parker, Brandon Knight, Jrue Holiday, Jeff Teague, and Jeremy Lin. Damian Lillard was the victor in this competition with a time of 29.8 seconds.
The 3 point Contest was after the Shooting Stars. The 3 point contest is a contest between some of the best shooters in the NBA. They get 5 shots at 5 different locations, summing up to 25 shots. The last ball, or the “money ball”, at each location is worth 2 points instead of the 1 point for each regular ball. The competitors for this contest were Matt Bonner, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, Ryan Anderson, Paul George, and Steve Novak. Kyrie Irving was the winner of this contest with 23 points in his last round.
The Slam dunk Contest, a fan favorite, was next. Some of the top dunkers in the league were a part of the contest. Kenneth Faried, the MVP of the Rising Stars was a participant in this contest. Other competitors were James White, Terrence Ross, Jeremy Evans, Eric Bledsoe, and Gerald Green. The competitors get two dunks in the first round to try to achieve the best score out of 50. The best two players' scores go on to the next round, where they get two more dunks. Terrence Ross won the contest by America voting for the winner.
The All Star game was played on the next day. The All Star game, for most fans, is the highlight of All Star Weekend as the best players in the NBA play against each other in a full game. The Starters for the East were LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Kevin Garnett, and Carmelo Anthony. The Starters for the West were Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin, and Dwight Howard. The West was the winner of the game with a score of 143-138 and Chris Paul won the MVP with 20 points and 15 assists.
