R.A. Dickey, New York Mets ace, was traded Monday to the Blue Jays in a 7 player swap.
The trade came down to a 72 hour period in which discussions with the player commenced and discussions with team owners ceased. Monday R.A. Dickey broke the news of the official deal even before the two teams did. Included in the deal with the Blue Jays was Dickey's personal catcher. He stated on twitter that he was excited and ready to pitch for the Toronto team. The 38 year old was a huge bargain with only a 25 million 2 year extension, after a break through season ultimately leading to the Cy Young award for the National League.
The Blue Jays, who had a mediocre season last year, are up and coming. This means with a refurbished bullpen with the newest edition of Dickey, that a pennant race is imminent. The American League East is usually strong, also including the: Yankees, Red Sox, Devil Rays, and Orioles, are all contenders. However the bullpen will ultimately be the deciding factor and the Blue Jays appear to have just that.
With this new edition to the Blue Jays team, the Toronto ball club is a serious contender in the American League East and possibly even a Pennant. The new and improved squad should not be judged by there usual reputation, and should be considered a serious team.
