NHL Lockout: OVER

Cody Goggin

The time is here. The time is near. For some sports fans, this has been more anticipated than anything else this winter. It is time for the return of the National Hockey League.

For the past few months, the NHL has been going through a “lockout.” That is whenever the teams and personnel are literally not allowed to practice or play games while awaiting the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement between the owners and the Players Association.

This would not be the first time that the NHL has been locked out. The league missed the entire hockey season in 2004-05. This year, 510 regular season games were cancelled. 41.5 percent of the entire season will be lost, making it even more difficult for teams to get in. A single losing streak could completely kill a team’s chances at making it into the playoffs.

In this 48 game season, there will not be as much discrepancy, in terms of records, between the top teams and the rest of the pack. The regular season will not provide a big enough sample size for insight into the rest of the year, making the playoffs even harder to predict. There may be a record number of upsets in the playoffs this season.

So for crazy hockey fans around the nation and around the globe, their nightmare has come to an end and the National Hockey League will resume play on January 19th.
