Blazers upset Mullen in home opener!
August 14, 2012Overland High School
March Madness may have begun today in college basketball, but the Overland boys' swimming and diving team wrote their own version of Cinderella with a huge upset over rival Mullen. Apparently, Cinderella can also wear kelly green and navy blue.
Coach Michael Pineda has been associated with the Overland program for nine years and during that time he has never beaten Mullen. That all changed with a shocking upset and 111-63 victory over the Mullen team at today's season opener.
The most exciting race was the 200 freestyle relay. Mullen started the race with a sizable lead and held until the final turn. Facing at least a half of a lap deficit, the Overland fans started cheering loudly and saw that the Blazer swimmer was making up ground quickly. The race was a close finish with the Blazers edging out the win. The finish times were 2:01:16 and 2:01:86.
Senior Austin Marshall had this to say about the meet, "I am so proud of the guys. I am shocked but am so happy for this win. Coach P told us that in order for us to win today we all had to push hard and give everything we had and we did."
Congratulations to the coaching staff and the entire team on a well deserved victory. Good luck on the next meet Blazers!
