State’s Top Teams Fall in Round 3

Some may call it upset week while others may say that it is just the way it is.

No matter what it is called, it does seem a bit surprising. One, two, three state-ranked teams went down in Week 3 of the state playoffs.

Close to home, and the one that was most shocking to those in the Houston area was No. 1 ranked Katy going down by the score of 9-7 at the hands of a feisty La Porte team.

“They (La Porte) played well and did what they had to do to win the game. But it was a tough way to lose and tough for our kids,” Katy coach Gary Joseph said. “Our kids played hard and I can’t complain.”

The Katy/La Porte game was a late game so the coaches of these two teams had the chance to know the outcome in other games that went on across the state.

And Joseph made mention that what had happened to the Tigers happened to a number of other top-ranked teams.

“It was a great season and I hate for it to end. I felt like this team had enough to go and play for it all,” Joseph said. “Obviously we didn’t get them and a lot of great teams went down today. Euless Trinity went down and Longview went down. It wasn’t like it was just us.”

Trinity lost to a solid team in Arlington Martin while Longview lost to Houston area squad Dekaney.

“La Porte was physical and did a good job of game planning us. We just looked we were a step off in everything that we were doing,” Joseph said.
