Orono Wrestling Returns Six Letter Winners - November 18, 2012

February 10, 2013
By mike Spacek of Orono Senior High School

The Orono Varsity and Junior Varsity Wrestling Team begins its season with six returning Letter Winners.  The Spartans compete in the tough Wright County Conference, including a new conference wrestling tournament held towards the end of the season.

This year’s squad is again led by Head Coach Joe McPherson and assisted by Dave Rowe and Jason Stripling.

“We really finished strong last season”, said McPherson.  “After sending two wrestlers to the State Tournament last year, I am really excited about this wrestling season.  We lost Gavan Winkels to graduation, but we have Jackson Striggow back as a Sophomore and last year’s Most Improved Wrestler award winner.”

Zach Mahan, a senior, returns as the leading pinner on his team from last year having pinned his opponents in 21 of his 39 matches.  Mahan was also honored with an All-Conference Honorable Mention award last year.  Charlie Schmid, a junior and also an All-Conference Honorable Mention award winner from last year, returns as a strong leader having scored more individual points against his opponents than any other teammate last season.

“Our fans are going to see some surprises this year”, said McPherson, “and you can also expect strong performances from our sophomores Jacob Williams and Cooper Tokar, freshmen Ben Nelson and Jon Schmid, and 8th grader Ronan Winkels.”  With his returning wrestlers, McPherson also noted a large influx of new wrestlers on the team along with a large crop of 7th graders coming into the program.  “We expect to see several of our wrestlers competing in the State Tournament again this season.”

The Spartan Wrestling Team begins its season with a triangular dual meet against Minneapolis South and Brooklyn Center on Friday, November 30th, at Minneapolis South High School.  The Varsity Team has a tough schedule of 17 dual meets and 8 tournaments prior to the State Tournament.
