By mike Spacek of Orono Senior High School

The Orono Spartan Wrestlers traveled to Brooklyn Center to take on both Minneapolis South and host Brooklyn Center in a Triangular last Friday, November 30th.  Competing in 13 of 14 weight classes, Orono beat Brooklyn Center 57-21 and lost 39-38 to Minneapolis South.

“WOW is the only word I can think of after tonight’s dual meets”, said Head Coach Joe McPherson.   “Winning against Brooklyn Center is a huge accomplishment especially noting that they are in our Sections and then only losing to Minneapolis South by a single point!, exclaimed McPherson.  “I can honestly say that tonight was more fun coaching than I have had in a long time.”

Orono vs. Minneapolis South

Jon Schmid, a Freshman, led the Spartans into the win column against Minneapolis South at 106 lbs. with a Fall at 1:40.  Lukas van Dyck, a 113 lb. 7th-grader, followed with another Pin at 2:34.  Eighth-grader Ronan Winkels, wrestling up at 120 lbs,  lost in overtime before Bobby Striggow, 126 lbs., came from behind to pin his opponent at 3:27.

Orono lost the next four matches with Thomas Hickey (8th Grade), Ethan Hanson (7th Grade), Cooper Tokar (Sophomore), and Parker Lyons (9th Grade) putting up great fights.

Junior Captain, Charlie Schmid, earned a Technical Fall at 170 lbs. with a 20-4 win over his opponent.  Sophomore Captain, Jackson Striggow, pinned his opponent at 3:21 in the 170 lb. weight class.  Orono forfeited at 182 lbs.

Jake Justen, a Sophomore wrestling at 195 lbs., lost his match before Cameron Paul, a 220-lb. Sophomore, pinned his opponent at 5:37.  Paul was ahead 14-3 prior to his pin.  Senior Captain, Zach Mahan, finished out the dual meet with an 8-7 win.

Jon Schmid and Lukas van Dyck both received forfeits to start the dual meet against Brooklyn Center before Ronan Winkels pinned his opponent in 28 seconds in the first period.  Bobby Striggow received his second pin of the night and remains undefeated for the season.  Thomas Hickey followed by pinning his foe at 1:27.  Ethan Hanson lost prior to Cooper Tokar beating his opponent 6-2.  Parker Lyons also lost.

Charlie Schmid pinned his foe with 51 seconds left in his match to remain undefeated.  Jackson Striggow lost a heart-breaker match with an 8-5 final.  Striggow was tied with his opponent late in the third period before losing.

“These young men showed a lot of character tonight.  I can’t express how proud I am of them,” stated McPherson.  He also added, “I can’t wait to get back to work at practice on Monday as we have a great season to look forward to!”

The Orono Spartan Wrestling Team travels to Andover High School on Saturday, December 8th, for an invitational tournament.
