FB D5 FINAL: Defense leads #2 Kirtland over #9 Coldwater, 28-7

MASSILLON – The Kirtland defense continued its dominating playoff ways, holding Coldwater to seven points in a 28-7 OHSAA Division V football state championship win Dec. 2 at Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
Second-ranked Kirtland (15-0), making its first trip to the state finals, rushed for 410 yards and held the ninth-ranked Cavaliers to only one score. During the 2011 playoffs, Kirtland’s defense allowed only 29 total points in five games, with the most points it allowed in a single game being eight.
Hornet senior running back Christian Hauber led the offense, running 30 times for 196 yards and two touchdowns. He was accompanied by fellow RB junior Damon Washington, who ran 18 times for 147 yards and two TDs.
Kirtland’s defense was led by junior Josh Iammarino and senior Neil Ribelli. Iammarino totaled 10 tackles, while Ribelli collected six and a half for the Hornets.
The Hornets took the lead in the first quarter and never relinquished it. Hauber scored on a six-yard touchdown run after an almost seven-minute opening drive. He was injured in the period but returned to play the entire game.
Washington’s seven-yard TD run with 10 seconds to go before the half pushed the Kirtland lead to 14.
In the third quarter, Coldwater junior quarterback Austin Bruns led the Cavaliers (11-4) on a six-play, 80-yard touchdown drive that ended with Bruns scoring on a six-yard scamper. The touchdown pulled Coldwater within seven heading into the fourth quarter.
The Hornets responded right away with Hauber breaking off a 39-yard run on the ensuing offensive possession, leading to his second touchdown of the game. With a little over four minutes remaining, Washington scored his second TD on an 81-yard run to put the game out of reach for the Cavaliers.
Kirtland wins its first state football championship in its first trip to the finals. The Hornets’ 15 wins is a school record and marks the first time they have finished undefeated.
Coldwater has reached the championship game the past three years, finishing as runner-up in 2009, 2010, and now 2011. The Cavaliers have now finished as state runners-up five times and champions twice.
