FB D4 FINAL: Norwayne upsets #1 Kenton for first title, 48-42

MASSILLON – Unranked Creston Norwayne scored with 31 seconds left to upset top-ranked undefeated Kenton, 48-42, for the 2011 OHSAA Division IV state football championship Dec. 3 at Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
The state football title is Norwayne’s first in school history. The Bobcats finish the season 14-1, setting a school record for wins in a season.
With just under three minutes to go in the game, Norwayne senior quarterback Adam Wallace and the Bobcats began an 80-yard touchdown drive capped off by a 31-yard Wallace throw to sophomore Kaleb Harris for the winning score.
In a hard-fought, back-and-forth title game, there were six championship game records broken and two tied.
Norwayne and Kenton (14-1) scored 13 touchdowns between them, tying a D4 record, and were a combined 42 of 74 passing for 703 yards, setting D4 championship game records in all three categories. Both teams also combined to score 90 points, which is third all-time in a championship game.
The Bobcats also tied a Division IV title game record by scoring seven touchdowns.
Kenton senior quarterback Maty Mauk broke a record previously held by his brother Ben for most touchdown passes in a Division IV championship game, throwing for five. His brother set the previous record of four in a 2002 title game victory against Portsmouth West.
Mauk, recently named the 2011 Ohio Mr. Football by the Associated Press, finishes the season with 7,181 total yards and 92 touchdowns. The Wildcat quarterback completed 382 of 566 passes for 5,413 yards and 68 touchdowns while rushing 241 times for 1,768 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Mauk finishes his career as the Ohio and national leader in career passing yards (18,929) and touchdown passes (219).
In a game that was eventually decided by scoring late, Norwayne’s defense set the tone early with constant pressure on the Wildcat offense. Bobcat sophomore defensive back Trevahn Beery intercepted a Wildcat pass twice in the first half.
The Bobcats’ defense continued to keep the Wildcats out of rhythm the entire contest, finishing with five sacks and eight tackles for a loss.
Norwayne’s offense was led by Wallace, who individually accounted for 422 yards of offense. He completed 15 of 24 passes for 282 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Harris was the beneficiary of five of Wallace’s passes, totaling 137 yards and two touchdowns receiving.
In defeat, Kenton senior receiver Brice Fackler set the record for most touchdown receptions all-time in all divisions, pulling in four. Fackler finished the game with five receptions for 178 yards.
Kenton finishes as state runner-up for the second time, the other coming in 2003.
