FB D2 FINAL: #1 Trotwood-Madison dumps #5 Avon, 42-28, for first crown

MASSILLON – No. 1 ranked Trotwood-Madison totaled 492 yards of offense to defeat fifth-ranked Avon, 42-28, and complete a perfect 15-0 season in the 2011 OHSAA Division II championship game Dec. 2 before a crowd of 6,699 at Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
The Rams’ Isreal Green broke four individual state championship records in the victory. The junior running back set marks for most touchdowns in a game in all divisions (six), most rushing touchdowns in a game in all divisions (six), most points all divisions (36), and most rushing yards in a game for Division II (326).
As a team, Trotwood-Madison set the record in D2 title games with 492 yards of total offense. The mark places the Rams eighth on the all-time list for total offense in a championship game.
Together, Trotwood and Avon set the Division II mark for most combined total yards in a championship game with 818, placing the game ninth on the all-time list for all divisions.
The game itself was a back-and-forth affair. The Rams held a 21-point advantage late in the first half, but Avon was able to cut the lead to seven by the end of the third quarter. In the 2010 championship game, Trotwood held a 19-point lead against Maple Heights and was unable to hold on to the lead.
Avon was opportunistic, scoring on an interception return in the first quarter and recovering an onside kick late in the third quarter in trying to keep pace with the Rams running attack. But the Eagles (13-2) ultimately fell short in their first trip to the state championship game.
The title is Trotwood-Madison’s first in football in its third trip to the championship game. Trotwood had previously finished as runner-up in 2010 and 1981.
