COLUMBUS – Second-ranked Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller won its sixth baseball state title June 2, defeating No. 19 Westlake, 9-6, in the OHSAA Division I state championship game at Huntington Park in Columbus.
Moeller has now won at least one title in each of the past five decades: 1972, ‘89, ‘93, 2004, ‘09, ‘12).
The Crusaders (26-5) scored eight runs in the first three innings to take control over Westlake, which pushed across one run in the second, third, and fourth innings and two more in the seventh.
Eight Moeller players got a hit, with senior Ty Amann, junior Spencer Iacovone, and sophomore Riley Mahan each driving in two runs.
Even with the early deficit, Westlake would not relent as it tried to chip away at the Moeller lead. The Demons were led offensively by seniors Corey Bowers, Andrew Dunn, and junior Jamie Lackner, who combined for five hits, five RBIs, and two runs.
Westlake leaves its first state tournament appearance as runners-up, finishing the season 24-7.
