COLUMBUS – Fourth-ranked Columbus St. Francis DeSales held off sixth-ranked Wapakoneta, 3-2, to win the OHSAA Division II state baseball championship game June 2 at Huntington Park in Columbus.
The 2012 championship is DeSales’ second in as many years after defeating Akron Archbishop Hoban last year. The championship is the Stallions’ third overall, having also won the title in 1979.
DeSales (26-6) took advantage of an early RBI bases-loaded walk by senior Derek Traini and a Wapakoneta error in the fourth inning to plate two runs. Senior catcher Jack Miller drove in the third Stallions run win a single in the fourth, finishing 2 for 2 with two runs scored.
Wapakoneta scored once in the fourth and again in the sixth when junior Josh Apple doubled down the left field line and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Brandon Miller. The Redskins’ threat continued after a hit-by-pitch and a walk, but they were unable to push across any more runs.
In its first trip to the state tournament, Wapakoneta finishes as state runner-up with a 25-6 record.
