AKRON – Top-ranked undefeated LaGrange Keystone was held in check through five innings before exploding for five runs in the top of the sixth inning, then adding two more in the seventh June 2 en route to a 7-2 win over fifth-ranked Greenville in the OHSAA Division II softball state championship at Firestone Stadium.
In the Wildcats’ 13th trip to the state tournament, they take home their third title (2006, 1999) to go along with six runner-up trophies. They end the season as the state’s only undefeated team at 32-0.
Greenville (29-5) senior pitcher Ashley Hanes kept Keystone off balance in the early going and saw her offense put the first runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI single by senior Kelly Martin and a successful break for home by senior Paige Wolter on a delayed steal at second by Martin.
But in the top of the sixth, Keystone collected five base hits and capitalized on two Greenville errors to take a 5-2 lead. Seniors Bee Shaw and Bri Buckley had RBI singles before senior Alyson Broschik drilled a two-run triple to give the Wildcats their first lead. Broschik then scored on an error, and Keystone added two more runs an inning later on a single by Buckley and an RBI triple by sophomore Carleigh Herrington.
Keystone senior pitcher Kenzie Conrad struck out seven and walked just one to improve to 25-0 on the season.
For Greenville, Hanes did not walk or strike out a batter, and only four of her seven runs allowed were earned. The Lady Waves were making their third trip to the state tournament and add a runner-up trophy to their state championship trophy from 2007.
