Kelly Houle of Columbia Falls and Libby's Justin Graham both advanced to the semifinals of the 215-pound weight class during first-day action Friday at the All Class state wrestling tournament.
Houle advanced with a stirring semifinal victory over Aleksei Grosulak of Billings Central.
"First period, we just beat on each other's heads quite a bit," Houle said.
Grosulak got a second period escape, though, and then another in the third period.
Houle answered with an escape and a takedown of his own - and led 3-2 with 10 seconds to go.
"With 10 seconds to go, he took a really hard shot. I blocked it with my head and cut the top of my eye open," Houle said.
It took three stitches to get that cut back together.
"He's solid. He's tough. Really good running back, too," Houle said of Grosulak.
For his part, Graham spent less than one minute on the mat. He pinned his first opponent in six seconds, then followed that up by pinning Dan Sanderson of Corvallis in 50 seconds.
Houle wrestles Brennan Fisher of Frenchtown in his semifinal round, while Graham takes on Paul Jensen of Havre.
Houle admitted he's hoping both he and Graham advance to the finals.
"I beat him all last year. This year, he's been beating me," he smiled.
Teamwise, Polson is currently eighth with 55.5 points, Libby is 10th with 54.5, Columbia Falls is 12th with 46.5 and Whitefish is 18th with 20 points.
Havre is in first place, as expected, with 154.5 points. Belgrade is a distant second at 102, Sidney is third with 77 points, Ronan is fourth with 70 points and Corvallis rounds out the top five with 65 points.
Also in the semis are: Kyle Leir, Libby (125), Ty Fouty, Polson (140), Tanner Benedict, Whitefish (145), Seth Wright, Libby (171), Brock Picard, Polson (171), and Kodie Kenfield, Columbia Falls (275).
"We have a lot of young kids who didn't perform as well as they should have, but we got them here and they got a look at it," said Polson coach Bob Owen.
"Hopefully, they'll have a better year next year.
"The young kids, they just get a little bit of stage fright. They haven't been here before, so they don't know what it's about," he said.
"I'm not going to say I'm discouraged. We knew we'd have a tough time with the young kids," he added.
"But I am happy with some of these kids. I'm hoping we can get our two guys in the semis... if we can get them to the finals, I'll be real happy," he said.
"We won a few we weren't counting on and we lost one that maybe we were hoping on," said Libby coach Jay Graham.
"We'll see how they bounce back. That's what they make state tournaments on."
"Hopefully, the ones that lost can bounce back," he said.
"We'll see. We've got a lot of wrestling."
Among the B-C schools, Eureka is sitting 25th after the first day with 16 points.
Randy Kirkedahl is still alive for the Lions at 125.
"We all could have done better. I'll leave it at that. We had higher expectations," said Eureka coach Danny Lemer.
