Expectations high for girls soccer this year

With 17 returning players, 10 of them seniors, the Columbia falls girls soccer team is hoping for good things this season.

"The expectations are high," coach Greg Trenerry said. "We lost just two starters from last year."

Midfielder Elena Potter and goalie Niesha Thompson graduated.

The Wildkats retain key components to an excellent team. They're led by McKenzie Kiser, who had 22 goals last year, and Danielle Delventhal, who knocked in 18. Both played summer ball, Trenerry said, and Delventhal joined a travel team that toured Europe.

Kira Kamrud, who played back-up goalie last season, will now have the starting role. Sophomore Andria Getts will be the back-up.

On opening day of practice Monday, 23 girls tried out. Trenerry said he'll probably keep a squad of 22. Last year the team went 10-3, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to Hamilton.

The team's 10 seniors include Kiser, Cedar Jordt, Elyse Gordon, Julia Burgi, Katy Darling, Katie Donner, Tayler Gress, Melissa Livingston, Madison Sandefer and Cortney White. Trenerry is assisted by his daughter, Nicolette Bales.

The girls open their season at home against Stillwater Christian School on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m.
