Records tumble at Bigfork meet

Cut Bank's Fitzpatrick breaks 3 meet standards; Bigfork's Carlson 2

BIGFORK - The record books were nearly thrown out at the Bigfork Invitational track meet on Saturday.

A total of 17 meet marks were broken - nine on the boys side and eight on the girls - and another was tied on a fast day atop the Bigfork track.

Out of 18 teams, the Bigfork girls and Frenchtown boys finished with the top scores at the six-year-old meet.

Bigfork senior Kayla Carlson gutted out two impressive victories in the distance events and inched past former Valkyrie standout Brooke Andrus in the record book. Carlson cruised through the 1,600 in a winning time of 5:22.09, breaking Andrus' 2006 mark of 5:22.10. Later in the afternoon, in a back and forth 800 race, Carlson held off Eureka's Bailey Malecha for first place, winning with a 2:22.06. Andrus' four-year-old mark was 2:22.10.

"I'm feeling pretty good. I did a lot more training in the offseason this year," Carlson said after the 1,600. "It was a bit slower than what I wanted but I'm going to keep practicing towards state."

In a meeting of Class B's top two sprinters, Cut Bank sophomore Deni Fitzpatrick and Bigfork junior Mallery Knoll battled in three events.

Fitzpatrick, a sophomore, edged Knoll in the 100 and 100 hurdles, but in the 300 hurdles it was Knoll out front.

Overall, Fitzpatrick broke three records on the day. She ran 12.55 in the 100, 26.50 in winning the 200 and 16.10 in the 100 hurdles.

"Deni is amazing and I'm just trying to catch up to her. I'm close," said a smiling Knoll. "Obviously competing with her is rough but I want to try to keep improving."

Caitlin Charlebois of Bigfork tied a record in the pole vault with a clear of nine-feet even.

Bigfork senior Keenan Evans broke a four-year best in the boys 200 with a winning time of 23.05. Evans finished second in the 100 and would have broke the previous record in that as well.

"It was exciting. I came up a little short (in the 100) and I felt like I was going to catch (winner Jonny Dilworth of Frenchtown) but I just didn't have enough time," Evans said.

The Bigfork boys finished fourth. Libby came in second and Missoula Loyola, who had three-event winner Mike Evans, came in third.

The Cut Bank girls finished seven points behind Bigfork for second and Frenchtown was third.

Malecha broke the girls 400 mark by more than a second, notching a 1:01.3.

Plains' Dillon Fryxell continued his climb in the high jump record books with a winning clear of 6-6. His best this season is 6-8, which is currently tops in the state for all classes.

Libby's Kody Berget broke the meet mark in the 300 hurdles with a 41.70.

Knoll also ran a leg on both of Bigfork's winning relay teams. The girls 400 relay group, with Jen Egdorf, Caitlin Charlebois, Quinci Paine, and Knoll won in 54.80. Carlson contributed a leg on the top 1,600 relay team that included Charlebois, Egdorf and Knoll. That group came in at 4:26.
