Individual Football Records Set In 2014!

We did have a few high school football records that were sent in 2014!  Let's start with the young man who had the most career receiving yards in state history!  That would be Thomas Field of Grenora, N.D.!  That's right the Montana state receiving record is now held by someone from North Dakota!  Thomas who plays for the co-op of Westby/Grenora finished his career with 216 catches, 3,338 yards and 53 touch downs!  He broke the record set by Ben Roberts of Missoula Seninel of 3,298 yards!

Also in 2014 we had two quarterbacks that went over 6,000 yards!  Westby Q.B. Cooper Olson finished his career with 6,669 yards, the most ever for a class "C" player and 6th on my all time list!  While Brady McChesney of Glacier ended up with 6,547 yards!  Brady is 4th among "AA" players and 8th overall!  By the way Cooper Olson also broke the all time T.D. passing recrod with 117, while Brady's 82 is the most in "AA" and third overall!

**********

2014 Football Notes!

The 56 points scored by Glacier in the championship game is a new state record!  The old record of 55 was first set 99 years ago by Butte!  Glacier also scored 645 total points this season!  They needed foive more to become the first "AA" program to average 50 for a season since Butte way back in 1923!

Speaking of scoring....Savage needed just one more point to average 70 for the second year in a row!  Thier 69.9 average is second to the state record that they set a year ago at 71.4!  Hot Springs was the second highest scoring team in 2014 as they averaged 68.4!  Hot Springs now holds the number 3,5 and 6 marks on my all time scoring list!

Wibaux get's their state class "C" record 6th state title!  That breaks a tie that they shared with Drummond at five!

Wow, the Rivals win again!  Before Geraldine and Highwood even formed a co-op they were the most domanite programs in Class "C" 6-man football winning a combined 15 state titles!  Well now they have back to back to make it 17 overall!

**********

Final Game For Two Top Football Stars!

It's really amazing to see the numbers that Westby/Gernora Q.B. Cooper Olson and W.R. Thomas Field have put up the past few years!  Going into the state class "C" 6-man state championship game against the co-op of Geraldine/Highwood Cooper has thrown for 6,477 yards while Field has 3,123 receiving yards!  Both will finish their career near the top in my all time Montana high school football record books!   Cooper Olson is the first from Montana to ever throw for more than 100 T.D's in his career!

   CAREER NUMBERS FOR BOTH:

  • Cooper Olson:  435-620-17 = 6,477   70%   115 T.D.'s
  • Thomas Field:  204 catches 3,123 yards, 52 T.D.'s

A Visit With Westby/Grenora Q.B. Cooper Olson!

It's interesting that Montana's most unique co-op of Westby, Montana and Grenora, N.D. have combined to win zero state football titles while their opponent Geraldine/Highwood have combined to win 15 championships!   The Mon-Dak Thunder of Westby/Grenora are led this season by Q.B. Cooper Olson of Westby and W.R. Thomas Field of Grenora!

     Please listen to this interview with Mr. Cooper Olson right here;

It's Time For Sate Volleyball!

It's hard to believe that this is the 11th year of the all class state volleyball tournament in Bozeman!  Returning state champions back at state!

  • "A":  Corvallis:  They won their first ever title a year ago!
  • "B" Huntley Project:  Wow, what a run!  Huntley has won 5 state titles in a row and 9 of the last 11!
  • "C" Gardiner has won the last two!

Universal Athletic Monday Honor Roll!

Leading off this week's Monday High School Honor Roll sponsored by Universal Athletic is Geraldine-Highwood running back Jake Malek!  In a 40-38 win over the co-op of Hobson-Moore-Judith-Gap Malek rushed for 355 yards and two touchdowns!

   Other's making the Universal Honor Roll this week;

Top Five Longest Road Trips In Round Number Two!

So who will travel the farthest this weekend during the high school football playoffs?

"AA":  466 miles for Billings West to play at Glacier

"A":  537 miles for Miles City to travel to Whitefish

"B":  429 miles for Baker to go to Townsend

"C":  392 miles for Broadus to go to Chinook

"C" 6-man:  657 miles for Westby/Grenora to go to Hot Springs

**********

657 Miles....One Very Long Road Trip!

Now we all know that we live in a big state....but to travel 657 miles for a football game...well that just may be a new record!  This weekend in the second round of the Class "C" 6-man high school football playoffs the Mon- Dak Thunder the co-op football team of Westby/Grenora will travel to Hot Springs!  I told head coach Troy Walters that it would be a shorter trip if the team went to Minneapolis, Minnesota!

The travel plans have the team leaving on Thursday morning, practicing in Reed Point, spending the night in Bozeman!  Friday traveling to Alberton to practice and spending the evening in Missoula.  Than on Saturday playing the game in Hot Springs and staying in Great Falls on the way home.  It's not often that a high school football team spends three nights in three different cities on one road trip!

Listen to what head coach Troy Walters has to say about his teams long road trip!

Quickest To Win A State Football Title!

So if the Wolfpack of Glacier win it all this season will they be the youngest "AA" program to win it all?  The answer to that question is NO!  The Bruins of Helena Capital won in just their 6th season back in 1978!  CMR won in Jack Johnson's third and fourth seasons...but it was the schools 11th season over all!

**********

One Unbelievable Performance!

Write down this name....Cooper Olson!  Over the weekend Mr. Olson had the football performance of a life time!  In a 75-21 playoff win over the co-op of Westby/Grenora Cooper was 22 of 22 with 328 yards and 8 touch downs!  Think about that 22 of 22!  Now that would not be easy in practice with no defense!

Up next in the 6-Man Class "C" playoffs Westby/Grenora will travel to Hot Springs!

**********

Almost Half Of All Football Teams Make The Playoffs!

In 2014 we have 142 high school football teams overall in all four classifications!  Now did you know that almost half of those teams qualify for the post season playoffs?  That's right in "AA" it's 8 of 14, in "A" 12 of 22, "B" 16 of 39 than in 6-Man "C" 16 of 34 and in 8-Man "C" 16 of 33!  Overall it's 48% of teams that play in the post season!

Plus this season we have six teams that got in with losing records!  Last year during the first round of the 6-Man playoffs three teams won by more than 40!  While in the 8-Man game we had three teams that won by more than 50!

So the question is should we have almost half of all teams make it into the post season?  My answer is..... why not?  This means more games for the players, cheerleaders and pep band, plus I don't think the parents mind watching their son's play at least one more game!

**********

Winning Thirteen State Titles In A Row Is The State Record!

So what Montana high school holds the state record for winning the most state titles in a row and in what sport?

Well the answer to that question is the Butte High Bulldogs wrestling program!

Here is the list of the top four on my all time list!

    1.  13   Butte Wrestling    1980-1992

    2.  12   Bigfork Girls Tennis   1986-1997

    3.  11   Browning Boys Cross Country  1974-1984

    4.  10   Havre Girls Swimming   2000-2009

**********

Most Dominant High School Football Teams!

So who are the most dominant high school football teams for 2014? Well it's the Savage Heat of Hot Springs! Now they say that in 6-Man Class "C" football their is not much defense! Well Hot Springs has only given up three touch downs all season! On the year Hot Springs has a margin of victory of almost 60 points a game!

In 8-man Class "C" football Savage leads the way by beating opponents by 55 per game! Savage also leads the state as the highest scoring team averaging almost 71 points a game!

In Class "B" top ranked Fairfield is also number one in M.O.V. at 31 per game!

In Class "A" it's the Wildcats of Columbia Falls at 36.8 and in "AA" it's all about the Wolfpack of Glacier averaging 50 and giving up only 15!

Ekalaka Plays Football With Just Seven Players!

Imagine playing high school football with just seven players! Well that is the challenge that head coach Tenadore Kittleman has with his program at Ekalaka this season! Plus the team with just one sub are also 4-4 on the season!

Please listen to more of this great story right here:

Football Coaching Milestones!

Big weekend for two of the winningest high school football coaches in state history!  This weekend when Drummond takes on Arlee, not only will the winner take home the Western "C" title but Drummond head coach Jim Oberweisser with a win could move into the top 5 on my all time list!  The next Drummond victory will give Coach Oberwiesser win number 222!  That would move him into a tie for 5th place along with Sidney's Mike Gear and Butte's Harry "Swede" Dalberg!

Also if Billings West gets a win at home this weekend agianst CMR West head coach Paul Klaboe would move into the top 10!  Paul's next win would give him 211 and place him in a tie for 10th place along with Terry Thomas of Dillon!

**********

Pat Kearney Remembered!

Some say that I am a sports historian.  That is so note true....the only Montana sports historian that I know of is Butte's Pat Kearney!  Recently Pat passed away at 59, please listen to my tribute to Pat.

You Do Not Need Big Enrollment Numbers To Succeed In Football!

Many sports fans say that you need big enrollment numbers to be successful in the game of high school football!  Well that is not true....just look at what some small schools like Baker, Forsyth, Fairfield and Butte Central have accomplished?

Listen to these coaches tell us why their programs are so successful with small enrollment numbers!

Best Winning Percentage Of Any Montana High School Football Coach!

We all know that recently retired Jack Johnson of CMR is the state's winningest coach!  But what Montana football coach has the very best winning percentage?

Well the second winningest coach on my list Don Schillinger of Baker never had a losing season in 37 years of coaching and his teams won 86% of their games!   Also winning over 80% in more than 30 seasons was Tim Roscoe of Frenchtown!  Malta's Scott King was at 80% in 24 years in Malta and also never once missed out on the post season!

The state record for the best winning percentage for any coach who has been in the game for 10 years or more.....Jeff Bertelsen of Wibaux!  In 14 years at Wibaux Jeff's teams are 132 and 17, that my friends is a winning percentage of 89%!  The second best winning percentage is the 90% for Rick Nordahl of Dillon...in his first season last year they went 12-0 and won the state championship!

And the very best winning percentage overall for any coach....100%!  Walt Chancy went 12-0 in his only season as the head coach at Helena Capital!

Well Forsyth stands out as the top defensive team in 2014 as they have only given up a single touch down in five games!  On the year Forsyth has out scored their opponents 209-6!

Than how about 6-Man class "C" Hot Springs!  Now everybody knows that defense is not a major part of the hi-scoring game of Montana 6-Man high school football....well Hot Springs has only given up two scores all year in 5 games!  On the season Hot Springs has outscored their opponents 269-13!

Best defensive team in each class:

The Rams Of Billings Central Are Not Ranked!

This past week the first high school football power poll was realeased and it was surprising to me that the Rams of Billings Central were not ranked!  That is the first time that the team that has played in the last seven state championship games in a row have not been ranked in the top five in more than eight years!

Well over the weekend Belgrade got by Miles City 34-25!  The loss for the Cowboys of Miles City their first all year....by the way the only loss for 3-1 Belgrade this season came against Billings Central 27-21!

Than over the weekend the Rams beat top ranked Dillon 28-20 snapping Dillon's 14 game winning streak!

You know what I am thinking that the Rams may be ranked this week!

**********

The Billings Central - Butte Central Series May Be Over!

Last Friday in Butte the Bishop Bowl turned out to be one wild game!  Butte Central won in over time 24-23....but the really excitment is what took place at halftime!

   Please give this a listen;

How About 391 Rushing Yards In One Game!

You know almost 400 rushing yards in a season would not be bad for some football players....but 391 yards in one game!  Over the weekend Brock Frisbie of Lambert had 391 yards as his team the co-op of Richey/Lambert got by Terry 80-78.

Brock was not alone in putting up big numbers on the ground!  In "AA" CMR junior back Andrew Grinde went for 294 while Joe Caicedo of Darby had a 261 yard game!

The state record for the most rushing yards in a single game is 446 set by Jolly Righetti of Whitefish back in 2003!

Rocky Picks The Top "AA" and "A" Football Teams!

So who do I think will be the top class "AA" and "A" football programs for 2014?

"AA"

1.  Glacier:   They were second a year ago!  Not bad for a school that is only in it's 8th year of high school football!

2.  Helena High:  If Helena Bengals win it all it would be thier first state football title in 82 years!

3.  Helena Capital:  All they have done is win 7 state championships since 1999!

4.  CMR

5.  Billings Skyview

"A"

1.  Billings Central:  The Rams will not loss a game this year!

2.  Dillon:  For the 4th year in a row it will be Dillon and Billings Central in the state "A" championship game!

 **********

Longest Football Win Streaks To Begin The New Season!

The two time defending state class "B" champs Sacred Heart out of Missoula will enter the 2014 high school football season having won thier last 23 games in a row!  They are just one more win away from making my list of the top 20 all time longest winning streaks in Montana football history!  Other winning streaks into 2014:

  • "AA" Bozeman 13
  • "A" Dillon 11
  • 'C" Ennis 12
  • "C" six-man  Hot Springs 12

The overall state record is 45 in a row held by Drummond from 2003 to 2006!

**********

State Record 624 Passing Yards In One Game!

So what is the state record for the most passing yards in a single game?  Well that would be 624 yards!  The record was set in October of 1995 when Billings Central Q.B. Chris Klien threw for 624 yards in a game against Colstrip!  Klien also holds the number two mark at 590 yards during that same season agianst Sidney!  Number three on my all time list is 549 yards from Drew Hedrick of Billings Senior!

Over all we have had six games where a Montana high school Q.B. has thrown for more than 500 yards!  The last to accomplish the feat was Butte's Dallas Cook!  In the first game of the 2012 season Dallas Cook threw for 523 yards in a 55-48 loss to Billings Skyview!

**********

We Add Two To A Very Exclusive List!

This summer we added two more names to the list of high school athlete's who have played in three of the major all star events that take place each summer!  Those events consist of the Montana - Wyoming All Star Basketball Series, The Montana - North Dakota All Star Football game and the East - West Shrine Football Game!

The two this summer that played in all three are Evan Epperly of Glacier and Troy Scott of Dillon!  It's interesting to note that the first three on this list are all from Plentywood; Travis Walker in 1995, Nick Walker in 1998 and than Jeff Nikoliasen of Plentywood back in 1999!
