Twins oust Mariners from tourney

Posted: Friday, August 1, 2014

LEWISTOWN — The Glacier Twins and Mission Valley Mariners combined for 27 hits and 11 errors in a thrilling nine-inning loser-out baseball game at the Montana/Alberta American Legion State A Tournament on Friday afternoon with Glacier claiming an 11-9 victory to stay in the hunt for a state championship.

The Twins got off to a fast start, scoring five unanswered runs in their first three innings at the plate. They scored one in the first and two runs in both the second and third innings.

After the Mariners finally scored a run in the bottom if the fourth, the Twins nearly put the game away with three more runs in the top of the sixth.

Mission Valley, who defeated the Twins in the Western A District Tournament last week, showed their resiliency and used the bottom sixth to bring some life to their comeback effort.

Mission Valley scored five runs, driving Twins’ starting pitcher A.J. Wetsch out of the game.

The Twins remained composed and each team scored three runs in the eighth inning, but it wasn’t enough for the Mariners tournament hopes as they were eliminated by Glacier.

Colten Parker went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI to lead the Twins. Teammate Vincent Smith added two RBIs with a 2 for 5 effort at the plate.

Mission Valley was led by Alex Killian, who went 3 for 4 from the plate with an RBI. Jacob Harrod, Trevor Paro and Nyqolas Gillingham hit doubles for Mission Valley.

Glacier will play Belgrade today at 1 p.m.

Dodgers, Belgrade to face off Friday night

Posted: Friday, August 1, 2014

The Laurel Dodgers will look to remain unbeaten at the 2014 Montana/Alberta State A American Legion Baseball Tournament on Friday night as they square off against the Belgrade Bandits at 7 p.m. in Lewistown.

The Dodgers (48-15) have already clinched a spot in the title game while Belgrade needs a win to keep their season alive.

Daniel Stamper will get the start on the mound for the defending state champions against the Bandits (43-29).

The right-hander is 4-1 in seven starts this season and sports an ERA of 2.30. Stamper, threw a five-inning no-hitter on May 3 against the Billings Angels, has allowed just 28 hits in 39 innings of work.

The teams have met twice this season with each team winning once.

The Dodgers won game one of their May 17 doubleheader in Belgrade 9-8 before the Bandits rebounded for a 7-0 win in game two.

In the Dodgers' win, Mason O'Donnell went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs while Karson Kukes was 2 for 3 with three runs scored.

Belgrade's Trevor Mahn, who is hitting .583 (7-12) in the tournament, went a combined 5 for 5 when the teams met in May.

In their win over Laurel, Josh Geir tossed a complete-game, three-hitter. Christian Schreckengost will get the start with Geir coming out of the bullpen Friday night.

With a win, the Dodgers would play the winner of the Glacier-Mission Valley game that begins at 4 p.m. on Friday. A Belgrade win set up a game for the Bandits against the Twins or Mariners on Saturday with the winner playing Laurel in the state title game.
