Twins find a way past Lakers A

Posted: Wednesday, July 16, 2014

A perfect 4 for 4 at the plate, Vinny Smith led the Glacier Twins  at the plate in the dramatic 14-13 come-from-behind victory over the Kalispell Lakers A in a nine inning game at Griffin Field on Wednesday.

The offense was on display all night long. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, but the Lakers put five runs across in the second to take an early 7-4 lead.

Whenever Glacier threatened the Lakers, Kalispell would promptly answer in the bottom half of the inning. Each team scored three runs in the fourth inning, and two in the sixth.

Alas, for Kalispell a dreadful eighth inning would prove costly.

Glacier scored four runs, taking a one-run lead, which would go unanswered as they held on for the win.

Smith hit a double and a triple in the contest, driving in a game-high four RBIs. Teammate Jayce Fagerland also collected four hits in the game. He went 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Colten Parker, Kyler Howke and Austin Robins all earned two-hit games with one RBI.

Kalispell had plenty of power at the plate as well. Tiler Whiteaker, Pat O’Connell and Keatin Mohl all hit triples. Whiteaker finished with a team-high three RBIs while O’Connell and Leif Erickson added two each.

The Twins can’t celebrate for long. They’ll face the Lakers today in Whitefish at 7 p.m. before their third matchup of the week on Saturday in Kalispell.

McClure, Mariners rock Libby, 20-2

A night after a 14-4 win over the Kootenai Valley Rangers, the Mariners trounced the Libby Loggers 20-2 on Wednesday night.

Mission Valley scored in every inning of the contest, but none proved to be more deflating for the Loggers than the 12 runs the Mariners sent across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Bransen Krebs earned the win on the mound for Mission Valley, pitching six innings of four-hit baseball. He allowed just two runs, walked one and struck out five batters on the night.

Offensively, Micah McClure couldn’t be stopped.

The Mariner went 4 for 5 with a game-high six RBIs. He hit two doubles while trying to compete with teammate Alex Killian at the plate.

Killian had one less hit that McClure, going 3 for 5 with four RBIs, but the Mission Valley catcher launched two home runs for a multi-homer game.

Zeke Webster-Yaqui, 3 for 5, added a pair of doubles and two RBIs while Derek Peel, 1 for 3, hit the game’s only triple. He also drove in a run and scored three times.

The pitcher Krebs also had a positive performance at the plate. His 2 for 5 effort included an RBI and three runs scored.

Bradley Pichler had a two-hit game. He went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.

Libby put two runs across in the top of the fourth. Catcher Oliver Grupenhoff hit a double and drove in a run. Erik Lauer also had an RBI for the Loggers. Will Reichel added a base hit as did Luke Haggerty, who went a perfect 1 for 1 at the plate. Reichel and Haggerty scored the runs that Grupenhoff and Lauer drove in.

Libby will travel to Florence take on the Bitteroot Red Sox on Friday.

The Mariners, hoping to continue their winning ways, will be in Florence with Libby, challenging the Bitteroot Bucs to a doubleheader at 3 p.m.

Early lead gives the Billings Blue Jays easy victory over Miles City, 13-0

The Billings Blue Jays refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against Miles City, recording a 13-0 victory on Wednesday at Denton Field.

The game was decided quickly as the Billings Blue Jays exerted their will early with six runs in the first three innings.

A groundout by Calvin Bjorgum during the first inning and an RBI single byJordan Benjamin, a wild pitch, a bases loaded walk, a groundout by Bjorgum, and an error in the second inning supplied the early offense for the Billings Blue Jays.

Cole McKenzie got a hit in each of his two at bats.

Patrick Zimmer looked sharp on the mound. Miles City managed just one hit off of Zimmer, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out eight during his five innings of work.

Cameron Maciel, McKenzie and Pearce Kurth helped lead the Billings Blue Jays. They combined for five hits and two RBIs.

Lassle couldn't get it done on the rubber for Miles City, taking a loss. He allowed 12 runs in 4 1/3 innings, walked seven and struck out one.
